EASTON, Pa. – After an impressive second place finish at Friday's Penn State National, other members of the Lehigh women's cross country team clinched a seventh place finish at Saturday's Lafayette Leopard Invitational. Freshman Anne Birkenmaier was Lehigh's top finisher crossing the line in 23:41.52.
"We wanted the women to see significant drops in their times on this course since the dual meet race," said head coach Debbie Utesch. "We had four women under 24 minutes in this group, which was a good showing as they raced for a spot on squad that we'll send to Patriot League Championships."
Birkenmaier's pace put her in 39th place and senior Marissa Galante followed right behind in 40th place. Galante crossed the finish line in 23:42.39. Junior Shannon Wright (23:51.49) wasn't far behind as she finished 45th.
Freshman Brenna Clark raced to a new personal best with a time of 23:54.89, which cut more than a minute off her previous best time of 25:05.40 that was set at this year's Lehigh-Lafayette dual. Freshman Ashley Strysko (24:16.75) placed 63rd and fellow-newcomer Marissa Karl (24:40.38) placed 82nd.
American won the Leopard Invitational with 55 team points, followed by Bucknell with 82. Host Lafayette finished third (141), TCNJ fourth (145), Cortland St. (153) and George Washington sixth (157).
Loyola senior Kiera Harrison placed first with a blistering pace of 21:44.87. Harrison was one of four Patriot League runners to finish within the top ten.
The Mountain Hawks will now begin preparations for the Patriot League Championships on Nov. 2. The race will be held on Lafayette's course as Lehigh searches for its first Patriot League Championship since 1992.
