Patriot League Championships Women's 6K Results
EASTON, Pa. – The Lehigh women's cross country team captured second place at the 2013 Patriot League Championships to secure the Mountain Hawks' best league finish since 2000. Lehigh finished just ten points behind first-place Boston University in the 6K race held at Lafayette's Metzgar Athletic Complex. The Mountain Hawks placed four runners in the top ten, with sophomore Jennifer Markham leading the way in fourth place.
"It's a mix of emotion because we had our hearts set on the championship, but we accomplished all of the goals that were set out for the team," said head coach Debbie Utesch. "There was really nothing else this group of women could have done, it was just how the chips fell with the other teams in the race. They did a tremendous job to finish second."

Boston University captured the team crown with 47 team points, and the first place runner in senior Rosa Moriello. The Mountain Hawks followed close behind with 57 points, while Navy claimed third with 81 points. Bucknell (106), Army (140), American (160), Holy Cross (182), Lafayette (183), Loyola (211) and Colgate (294) rounded out the field.
Markham raced her way to a first team All-Patriot League honor and fourth place finish with a time of 22:09.10. Graduate student Rosie Roessel finished eighth (22:26.89), with junior Ingrid Simon (22:27.99) and sophomore Elizabeth Weiler (22:30.62) following close behind in ninth and tenth, respectively. Roessel, Simon and Weiler were all named second team All-Patriot League due to their top-ten finishes.
"It's really exciting for me personally, but more importantly because of what we did as a team," said Markham. "We were able to get four girls in the top ten which is a really exciting thing. This year we went into the race really sticking out necks out and trying to do the best we could."
Senior Peggy Lai crossed the line in 23:06.93 to claim 26th place, while Anne Birkenmaier (23:44.95) continued her impressive freshman campaign to place 50th. Junior Shannon Nelson followed in 53rd place with a time of 23:51.94.
The Mountain Hawks will now gear up to host the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Qualifier race on Nov. 15. The regional race will be held on the Goodman Campus Cross Country Course. More information on the race can be found here.
