BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's cross country team secured its third ever top ten finish at the NCAA Division I Cross Country Mid-Atlantic Regional Championship when the Mountain Hawks placed ninth on Friday at the Goodman Campus Cross Country Course. All seven Lehigh runners who competed at the race recorded new personal records, beating their previous best times by at least 21 seconds.
"Our women did a tremendous job," said head coach Debbie Utesch. "We were fast at the right time of the year. They put a great effort out there and established themselves into the positions that they needed to get into."
The Mountain Hawks finished in ninth place with 277 team points to claim the highest place of all Patriot League Schools. Villanova won the event with 31 team points the help of first and second place runners, Emily Lipari and Nicky Akande. Georgetown was close behind in second place with 35 team points.
Sophomore Jennifer Markham led the way for the Mountain Hawks with a time of 21:01 to finish 28th. Markham's blistering pace was 55 seconds faster than her previous best, and is good for the second fastest time ever run by a Mountain Hawk on the Goodman Course.
Sophomore Elizabeth Weiler finished close behind in 39th place with a time of 21:14, 56 seconds fast than her previous best. Weiler's race is now the third fastest by a Mountain Hawk runner on Lehigh's course.
"Jen did a great job and she's only a sophomore so we're really excited about what she's bringing forward," said Utesch. "Right behind her was Liz, another sophomore. We're very excited about what this team was able to do this year and what they'll do going forward."
Junior Ingrid Simon finished in 53rd place with a time of 21:29, and was followed closely by graduate student Rosie Roessel (21:32) in 60th place. Simon's time is now fourth on the top ten all-time Lehigh performers on the Goodman Campus Cross Country Course, while Roessel's is fifth.
Sophomore Carlie Skellington impressed with a time of 22:11 to finish 97th. Senior Peggy Lai (22:27) placed 117th, while Anne Birkenmaier (22:38) capped off her impressive freshman campaign with a 120th place finish.
