PRINCETON, N.J. - Lehigh women's cross country competed at Princeton University for the Princeton Fall Classic on Friday morning, the Mountain Hawks' second away meet of the season. The Mountain Hawks placed 14th out of 25 teams, scoring 437 points.Â
Kaitlyn Highduch led the Mountain Hawks once again, placing 61st overall running 21:13.4. Junior Grace Hughes finished next at 21:27.4, good for 83rd place. Senior Lucy Afanasewicz finished just behind Hughes at 21:32.0. The New Jersey native placed 88th in the return to her home state.
"We focused on two words, poised and engaged," head coach Debbie Utesch explained. "We wanted to take the focus off the clock and stay poised competing against some really high level competition."
Juniors Devon Sutton and Hope Trimmer were the next two to finish for Lehigh. They both ran the fastest 6000-meter races of their careers, regardless of course. Sutton ran 21:40.9 to finish in 107th, and Timmer ran 21:56.7 to place 137th. Sophomore Kaya Meler crossed the finish line next in 22:34.1. She was the sixth Lehigh finisher, placing 186th overall. First-year Zoë Louis closed out Lehigh's scoring seven in 206th, running 22:46.6.
Coach Utesch had this to say about the team performance:
"This was a multiple loop course so we needed to stay engaged in competing the whole way over a course that runs very differently than the Goodman campus course that they have been on all year. This was a very strong race team race for our women but at the same time it's not our best so I'm excited for the next two weeks."
The Mountain Hawks will now gear up for next weekend, when they head to Haverford College for the Haverford Invitational on Friday, October 24
