BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's cross country team will head to two meets this weekend in hopes of continuing its successful season in the last race action before the Patriot League Championships. Some members of the team will travel to State College to compete in the Penn State National on Friday, while others will head to Easton to partake in the Lafayette Invitational.
The Mountain Hawks will enter the weekend on the heels of a 26th place finish at the prestigious 40th Annual Paul Short Run, which served as the highest finish of any Patriot League school at the event. Following the impressive performance, Lehigh made its season debut in the Mid-Atlantic Regional Rankings at the number nine spot.
Junior Ingrid Simon and grad student Rosie Roessel were Lehigh's top finishers at the Paul Short Run. Both runners recorded a new personal best with identical times of 21:53 to take home 102nd and 103rd place. Both women have impressed for the entire season, with Simon capturing her first collegiate win at the Lehigh-Lafayette dual and Roessel being Lehigh's top finisher at the season-opening Lehigh Invitational.
Sophomores Elizabeth Weiler, Jen Markham and Carlie Skellington all finished the Paul Short Women's College Gold 6K in 23:00 or under, adding to the Mountain Hawks strong finish. Freshmen Anne Birkenmaier and Ashley Strysko have both impressed in their first season as Mountain Hawk runners.
The races at Penn State and Lafayette will serve as the final competitions before the Patriot League Championships on Nov. 2., which will be held on Lafayette's course. Head Coach Debbie Utesch's squad is searching for its first Patriot League Championship title since 1992.
Full results from Friday and Saturday's meets will be posted on Lehighsports.com at the conclusion of the events.
