BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women's tennis team heads to West Point, N.Y for the Patriot League Championship, hosted by Army beginning Friday. The fifth-seeded Mountain Hawks will play No. 4 seed Colgate in the first of three quarterfinal matches set for Friday at Army's Malek Tennis Courts.
The Mountain Hawks will be looking to advance to the semifinal round for the first time since 2009, while also avenging an earlier loss to Colgate. The Raiders also knocked Lehigh out in the first round of the 2010 and 2011 Patriot League tournaments.
Lehigh went 5-14 during the regular season and 2-4 against Patriot League opponents. The Mountain Hawks fell 5-2 to Colgate April 7 in Verona, N.Y. and dropped their final two regular season matches.
Junior Jenai Bilimoria and sophomore Abby Farrell have been Lehigh's top players in 2013. The duo combined for all three wins in the previous meeting with the Raiders, winning at No. 1 doubles and then posting wins at the top two singles flights.
Bilimoria and Farrell went 10-9 in doubles play this season and 4-2 against league opponents. The duo is also tied for the team lead with 7-12 records in singles. Bilimoria was 4-2 in league singles matches at the top flight, while Farrell was 3-3.
Junior Taylor Hampshire is expected to play No. 2 doubles alongside freshman Ali Kaminetsky, while junior Jill Sloand and freshman Marian Prim have been the No. 3 doubles pairing as of late. Behind Bilimoria and Farrell, the rest of Lehigh's singles lineup could feature Kaminetsky at No. 3, sophomores Emily Bruch and Molly Brooks at No. 4 and No. 5 respectively, and Prim at No. 6.
Lehigh has never won the Patriot League women's tennis championship. The Mountain Hawks' only appearance in the finals was back in 1999.
Colgate enters the championship as the No. 4 seed at 11-5 overall and 2-3 in league matches. The Raiders own league wins over Lehigh and Lafayette but lost to Army, Navy and Bucknell.
The Patriot League Championships will kick off Friday at 9 a.m. with the Lehigh-Colgate match. No. 2 seed Navy will meet No. 7 Lafayette at noon, while No. 3 Bucknell will face No. 6 Holy Cross at approximately 3 p.m.
The winner of the Lehigh-Colgate match will face top seed and eight time defending league champion Army in Saturday's first semifinal at 10 a.m. The second semi-final is scheduled to start at 2 p.m. and will feature the victor of the Navy-Lafayette and Bucknell-Holy Cross matchups. The championship match will be played on Sunday at 1 p.m. Tournament action is scheduled for Army's Malek Tennis Courts.
