Men’s soccer seniors look back on their careers

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's soccer senior class of four has certainly made its mark on the program. All four have seen significant action over their decorated careers, helping lead Lehigh to a pair of Patriot League Tournament appearances while enjoying success in the classroom as well. From the game-winning goal to clinch a tournament appearance in 2010 to the game-tying goal against No. 1 nationally-ranked Maryland in 2012, these Mountain Hawks have performed when it's mattered most. These four own an average GPA of 3.09.
Ben Borin, #6
Borin joined the Mountain Hawks in 2010 as a three-time All-State player from Wyoming. The Mountain Hawk immediately impressed in the brown and white, making 11 appearances and six starts during his freshman campaign. During his junior year, Borin tallied 800 minutes in the Lehigh midfield and fired ten shots throughout the season. Throughout his time at Lehigh, Borin has seen action in 42 contests and has been a key piece in Coach Koski's midfield. Strong in the classroom, Borin owns a 3.29 GPA as a Finance major. He has cracked the Dean's List on multiple occasions while earning a spot on the Faculty Athletics Council Award for a semester GPA over 3.2.
What's your favorite Lehigh soccer memory up until this point?
BB: My most memorable Lehigh soccer moment was beating Penn State last year. There was so much going on within our team and we were in much need of a win in order to come together. The atmosphere was amazing, the crowd was extremely active and getting the win really helped our morale.
Describe the relationship with your fellow seniors.
BB: I think of my fellow seniors as my best friends. It has been us against the world and we have battled four years of adversity together. Being able to face the challenges of being a student-athlete with a group of friends that I knew were enduring the same challenges has been an extremely rewarding experience.
Describe the feeling going into Senior Night. What are some of the thoughts going through your mind as you're nearing the end of your collegiate career?
BB: Most of what I feel is excitement. Soccer has been such a major part of my life, but I am excited to put soccer behind me and begin working towards new goals that I have set for myself.
What will you miss most about Lehigh soccer?
BB: I will miss the competitive atmosphere that Lehigh soccer provides. I will miss my teammates and the strong relationships that I have cultivated over the past four years.
What are your postgraduate plans?
BB: I will be working for Morgan Stanley in their sales and trading division.
Kyle Lucas, #8
Lucas saw action right from the start of his time in Bethlehem, participating in 21 games throughout his freshman and sophomore campaigns to help lead the Mountain Hawks to back-to-back Patriot League Tournament appearances. During his junior season, Lucas played in 17 games and scored the game-winning goal in a crucial Patriot League match against Holy Cross, his first-career collegiate goal. He played 90+ minutes in six games during his junior campaign. The Falmouth, Maine native has started in four games so far this season. Lucas has enjoyed success in the classroom, earning a spot on the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll as a junior while cracking the Dean's List last spring. He has also earned the Faculty Athletics Council Award for a semester GPA over 3.2.
What's your favorite Lehigh soccer memory up until this point?
KL: My favorite soccer memory up until this point is my freshman year when we beat Lafayette. It was an amazing atmosphere to win against our rivals and one I will always remember.
Describe the relationship with your fellow seniors.
KL: The seniors share an amazing relationship with each other. We all bring different personalities and traits that have developed through the ups and downs of our four years here at Lehigh. Through this, we have grown very close and learned that we will always share amazing relationships with each other.
Describe the feeling going into Senior Night. What are some of the thoughts going through your mind as you're nearing the end of your collegiate career?
KL: Senior Night will be very emotional, not only knowing this is probably the last time we will be playing competitive soccer with each other and all of our teammates, but also for our career. It will be hard knowing something that has brought so much to my life is now going to be instantly gone.
What will you miss most about Lehigh soccer?
KL: I will absolutely miss the guys and the camaraderie we share. We are really close knit and all go through the same things. The bus trips, the locker room, the late nights, and of course on the field will always be parts of Lehigh soccer that I will miss.
What are your postgraduate plans?
KL: I am going into construction management, working with a firm to efficiently and cost-effectively build residential, commercial and industrial buildings.
James Meyerkord, #9
Meyerkord has made double-figure starts every season, beginning in 2010 when he played in all 18 games (starting 12) as a freshman. He scored one goal and added two assists to lead Lehigh to the Patriot League Tournament. Meyerkord followed in 2011 with a goal and assist, highlighted by the game-tying goal in a 1-1 tie at #22 California. The Missouri native added two goals and one assist last season, including a second-half game-tying goal at #1 nationally-ranked Maryland. Meyerkord was named co-captain prior to this season and has led a young squad in 2013, playing in all 16 games while starting 13. Strong in the classroom, Meyerkord owns a GPA over 3.0, has been named to the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll and earned the Faculty Athletics Council Award. Meyerkord is active in the leadership realm as a member of Leadership Legacies.
What's your favorite Lehigh soccer memory up until this point?
JM: My favorite memory was the 1-0 win against Lafayette during my freshman year. This was the best atmosphere I have played in to date. It was my first true experience of Lehigh vs. Lafayette and we came out on top.
Describe the relationship with your fellow seniors.
JM: Although we all come from different backgrounds and are pursuing different majors, we seem to connect well and all take similar views on specific subjects. Overall, we are a close group of guys who care a lot about each other and like to have a good time together.
Describe the feeling going into Senior Day. What are some of the thoughts going through your mind as you're nearing the end of your collegiate career?
JM: It's a weird feeling to know that something that's been such a substantial part of my life for the better part of 15 years is coming to an end.
What will you miss most about Lehigh soccer?
JM: I will miss the day-in and day-out grind alongside my teammates.
What are your postgraduate plans?
JM: I am keeping my options open, but at some point I hope to get into engineering for an energy firm. No specifics on what exactly I want to engineer.
Ben Wysocki, #5
Wysocki has enjoyed a decorated career in the brown and white. As a freshman, he played in all 18 games, scoring a goal and adding three assists. His first-career goal was the game-winner at Army to help Lehigh clinch a Patriot League Tournament berth. That effort earned him Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week honors. Wysocki dished two assists as a sophomore, including one against Army to, again, clinch a league tournament bid. He added a goal and two assists last season, earning Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week honors after scoring the game-tying goal at Army, which sent the game into overtime. Wysocki has enjoyed success in the classroom, owning a GPA over 3.0 while garnering several academic awards as well. He has earned a spot on the Dean's List and Patriot League Academic Honor Roll while also garnering the Faculty Athletics Council Award.
What's your favorite Lehigh soccer memory up until this point?
BW: I actually have two favorite memories. The first one was from my freshman year, when I scored the game winning goal in overtime against Army to secure a spot in the Patriot League Tournament. It was a very special moment for me to score my first-ever collegiate goal at such a crucial time for the team, and will be something I'll always remember. The second memory was from my sophomore season when the team travelled to California to play Cal Berkeley and Stanford. I think the team really bonded throughout that trip and, on top of that, we had a successful weekend, tying then nationally-ranked Cal and beating Stanford.
Describe the relationship with your fellow seniors.
BW: Jimmy, Ben, Kyle and Ciaran have been great friends of mine since the first day I stepped on campus. We have been through a lot together over the last four years, and have created a number of memories along the way. We have lived together for the past year and a half, and I am looking forward to our final semester together. I know each of them will go on to do great things.
Describe the feeling going into Senior Day. What are some of the thoughts going through your mind as you're nearing the end of your collegiate career?
BW: It will definitely be an emotional night for me as well as my parents. Soccer has given me plenty of wonderful opportunities and memories ever since I started playing 17 years ago, and my parents have been supportive every step of the way. It is hard to believe that my competitive playing career will finally be coming to an end. However, I would love to finish my career on a positive note with a win.
What will you miss most about Lehigh soccer?
BW: I will miss spending time with my teammates (past and present), who are now some of my best friends.
What are your postgraduate plans?
BW: I am looking forward to applying my Industrial Engineering major to my next job to hopefully improve and optimize processes and systems within either the financial or athletics industry. In addition to finding a job that interests me, I plan on pursuing an MBA after gaining a few years of job experience. Finally, I will continue to stay involved in soccer since I plan on coaching in the future.
