Brown and White Meet Results
BETHLEHEM, Pa. ā The Lehigh swimming and diving programs have been hard at work in preparation for the 2013-14 season, which for the Mountain Hawks officially begins in just over two weeks. On Wednesday, head coach Rob Herb introduced the 11 first year student-athletes who arrived on campus in late August.
Ā
The class of 2017 consists of six men and five women who will provide depth and talent to a Lehigh program that continues to make strides both in an always-improving Patriot League, and also at the national level.
Ā
"This group is an explosive talented group," said Herb, who enters his tenth season. "They are hardworking, team-playing and ready to make Lehigh proud. Overall, this freshman class completely complements the upperclassmen.Ā I am excited to stand pool side and watch the fireworks!"
Ā
The sprints have been the strong point of Lehigh's men's program for the last several years and Herb has bolstered that area with the addition of Justin White from Illinois and Jamal Willis from Philadelphia. White swam for Fenwick High School and Team Millennium. Among his pre-Lehigh accomplishments, White anchored the 200 free relay team that finished second in the state last season. Willis comes to Lehigh from the William Penn Charter School and the Penn Charter Aquatic Club. He comes in having won the 50 yard freestyle in the last two Eastern Interscholastic swimming championships.
Ā
Kevin Huntley is a breaststroke/individual medley specialist from Severna Park High School in Maryland. He swam competitively for the SPY Swim Team and reached the C Final in the 200 IM at short course Y-Nationals in two consecutive years.
Ā
Hailing from Laurel Highlands High School in Uniontown, Pa. is Justin Kostelnik. A capable backstroke, butterfly and IM swimmer, Kostelnik owns a seventh place finish at YMCA nationals in the 200 meter butterfly.
Ā
Versatile Jacob Moyar comes to Lehigh by way of Centerville, Va., and Maggie Walker Governor's School. He has swam sprint freestyle, distance free and IM but his best events are in the butterfly where he made the finals in the 200 at NCSA Junior Nationals.
Ā
The Lehigh men have also added a diver in the incoming class in Colin Smith from Strath Haven High School. Smith competed for the Rose Valley Swim and Dive team and was a part of the West Chester Diving program.
Ā
"The men's group focused on sprint relays and some new strength in the strokes," Herb said. "Willis and White fill the sprint relays trying to repeat as 200 free relay Patriot League Champions while Moyar and Kostelnik will bring Lehigh's 200 flys and IMs to the national stage."
Ā
On the women's side, Kelly Carroll is a strong all-around swimmer from New Providence High School in New Jersey. Caroll swam freestyle, butterfly and IM for New Providence and the Summit Area YMCA. She has qualified for YMCA short course nationals in ten different events over the past five years. Caroll owns six individual first team All-County awards and was Union County Swimmer of the Year as a senior.
Ā
The second of three New Jersey products in the women's side is Caitlin Grady from Upper Saddle River and Northern Highlands Regional High School. Grady was an All-North Jersey and All-Bergen County selection. She owns four high school records including individual marks in the 200 IM and 100 yard breaststroke. Grady also competed for the Condors Swim Club.
Ā
Valerie Lauer hails from Park Ridge, N.J. where she swam for Immaculate Heart Academy and also the New York Shark Aquatics. Lauer captained Immaculate Heart to its sixth straight state championship, while winning an individual state title in the 100 yard butterfly as well as a relay title. She specializes in butterfly and distance freestyle.
The only Pennsylvania native in the incoming women's class is sprinter Kaitlyn Ruffing from Murrysville and Franklin Regional High School. A member of the Franklin Area Swim Team, Ruffing's career highlights include winning the 100 free and receiving the Carol Zaleski Award at the Allegheny Mountain Christmas Meet.
Ā
Rounding out the class of 2017 is Cora Summerfield from Bel Air, Md., and Aberdeen High School. Summerfield, who competes in freestyle, butterfly and IM, also swam for the North Baltimore Aquatic Club. She recorded six career best times and made six sectional cuts at the Maryland State Short Course Championships.
Ā
"The women are talented and competitive," Herb said. "They cover everything from the sprints to the distance and everywhere in between. With them connected to the upperclassmen, we become one tough team to beat."
Ā
In addition to the 11 newcomers, Lehigh returns a number of strong corps of swimmers in both genders, including four of its five All-Patriot League performers from a year ago.
Ā
The freshmen equipped themselves well in Lehigh's annual Brown and White meet, which was held September 27. Ruffing posted a victory in the women's 100 yard freestyle, while Moyar captured the men's 200 IM.
Ā
The Mountain Hawks will open the dual meet season with a pair of road meets October 25-26. Lehigh visits West Chester on Friday October 25 and will then head to Rider the following day. The Mountain Hawks will open their home schedule against Colgate and NJIT (men only) on November 2.
