The Rivalry: Lehigh vs. Lafayette
GLADSTONE, N.J. – Behind a dominant all-around team effort, the Lehigh men's golf team reclaimed the President's Cup from rival Lafayette with a 10.5-2.5 win Tuesday at Hamilton Farm Golf Club. The Mountain Hawks claimed the inaugural cup in 2011 but lost it to the Leopards last year. This time around Lehigh left no doubt, losing just two matches and exceeding the seven points necessary to reclaim the cup.
Â
The day-long event featured a Ryder Cup-style match play format. Play began in the morning with three better ball nine-hole doubles matches. Lehigh captured two of the first three matches with senior Alex DiClemente and sophomore Jonathan Heydt downing Chad Bell and Phil Rosengarden 2 and 1, and sophomore Harley Abrams and junior Zach Allinson posting a 1 up win over Josh Feinberg and Jared Mactas.
Â
The second nine holes in the morning featured doubles play with an alternate shot format as Lehigh extended its lead to 5-1 by winning all three matches. DiClemente teamed with junior Carlos Kim to defeat Bell and Rosengarden 1 up. Abrams and Allinson posted their second win of the day, 2 and 1 over Feinberg and Mactas. Freshman Ethan Wall and senior Andrew Arnold avenged a loss earlier in the day with a 1 up win over Kirk Massie and Travis Ricca.
Â
The Mountain Hawks closed the day out by claiming five out of seven singles matches. Kim posted the most lopsided win at 4 and 3 over Garrett Sweeney, while DiClemente and Abrams both won 3 and 2 over Rosengarden and Mactas, respectively.
Â
Wall and Arnold also posted singles wins, with Wall beating Bell 2 up and Arnold winning 1 up over Feinberg.
Â
Massie posted Lafayette's lone singles win 2 and 1 over Allinson, while Heydt halved his match against the Leopards' Ben DeForest.
Â
The Mountain Hawks will close out their fall season when they host the Lehigh Invitational, October 27-28 at Saucon Valley Country Club.
