Lao-Gosney, Souders and Poillon named USILA All-Americans

BETHLEHEM, Pa. - Senior Roman Lao-Gosney, sophomore Ty Souders and freshman Matt Poillon were named All-Americans on Thursday, as announced by the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association. Lao-Gosney and Souders earned a spot on the third team while Poillon garnered honorable mention status. They become Lehigh's first All-American since Jeff Jenkins in 1994 while tying for the most honorees in program history (previously in 1925).
The three become Lehigh's 11th, 12th and 13th all-time All-Americans dating back to the program's first honoree in 1914. The trio all garnered First Team All-Patriot League laurels in leading the Mountain Hawks to a school-record 14 wins and the program's first-ever Patriot League Tournament Title and NCAA Tournament appearance. Lehigh earned the #7 seed in the tournament and reached as high as #4 in the USILA Coaches Poll.
In total, eight from the Patriot League were named All-Americans, led by Lehigh's three. Colgate and Army also had a pair while Bucknell had one. Colgate's Peter Baum was named a First Team All-American.
Lao-Gosney's honor comes one day after being named to the South roster for the 71st annual USILA/LaxWorld North-South Game. The Raymond, Maine native enjoyed a breakout season in 2012, finishing third on the team with 26 points (20 goals, six assists) while leading the way with 89 shots. Also a two-time Academic All-Patriot League honoree, Lao-Gosney had a point in 15 of the 17 games this season, scoring a goal in 14 of them.
Souders spearheaded one of the nation's top defenses, posting a career-high 31 groundballs and 15 caused turnovers while covering one of the opposition's top players. One highlight (of many) came in the Patriot League Semifinals vs. #19 Army when he held fellow All-American Garrett Thul to a season-low one goal. The Mountain Hawks' defense stands second in the nation in scoring defense, allowing just 6.82 goals per game while holding six teams to four goals or less.
Poillon wrapped up a stellar freshman campaign standing second nationally in goals against average (6.75) and fourth in save percentage (59.7). The Patriot League Goalie of the Year garnered six Patriot League weekly awards - Goalie of the Week four times and Rookie of the Week twice - while also earning Cascade National Rookie of the Week on two occasions. The most recent came after his stellar performance in the NCAA Tournament vs. Maryland when he tied a career-high 16 saves.
