2012 men’s soccer season concludes with banquet

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh men's soccer team wrapped up its 2012 season with its annual banquet held in the University Center on Sunday, December 9th, sponsored by the Lehigh Athletics Partnership. Three awards were presented to student-athletes who excelled on and off the field. The banquet included dinner, an awards presentation and a reflection on the season by head coach Dean Koski.
The Athlete of the Year, which was presented to sophomore defender Ali Famili, is awarded to the student-athlete who makes the most outstanding contribution to the athletic success of the team. Famili anchored Lehigh's defense that allowed 1.47 goals per game, playing in 16 games and starting 15 for the Mountain Hawks. He added the game-winning goal in a 2-1 victory over Navy and finished fourth on the team with 15 shot attempts.
The Scholar-Athlete Award was presented to senior goalkeeper Taylor Sulmonetti. The award, which is voted on by team members, is presented to a player who exemplifies academic success along with strong play on the field. Sulmonetti was honored with the award for the second consecutive year. A chemical engineering major, he holds a 3.80 cumulative GPA. He is also a four-year member of the Dean's list and Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.
The Coaches Award, presented to the student-athlete who made noteworthy contributions to the team in areas of attitude, improvement and leadership, was also given to Sulmonetti. The senior coupled his academic success with a stellar season in goal for the Mountain Hawks, playing a career-high 208 minutes and only allowing two goals while making 17 saves.
Sulmonetti earned the first two starts of his Lehigh career against Brown and Penn State, leading Lehigh to a 1-1 record in the pair of games and only conceded one goal. He also played 45 minutes against No. 1 Maryland and turned in an outstanding performance, making six saves and turning away many crosses and scoring attempts to keep Lehigh alive in the match until the top-ranked Terps scored the game-winning goal with two minutes left to win 2-1.
Sulmonetti finished the season with a .86 Goals Against Average and played an outstanding role in helping welcome the Mountain Hawks 10 freshmen to the team. Throughout the season, he served as a tremendous role model and mentor for Lehigh's younger players.
