10/26/2012 3:19:00 PM | Men's Soccer
BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Three Lehigh men's soccer seniors will conclude their final season in the brown and white, as they have created a legacy, playing a key role in the Mountain Hawks' recent success with three-consecutive Patriot League Tournament appearances. The group has excelled off-the-field as well, earning numerous academic accolades. The Class of 2013 has been assembled from three different regions of the United States including Illinois, Georgia and Maine, but the camaraderie and friendship they have developed over the past four years will not end with the season, as they have created a lifelong bond through the Lehigh men's soccer program.
Taylor Sulmonetti - Goalkeeper - Marietta, Ga. - Chemical Engineering
Sulmonetti came to Lehigh from Marietta, Ga. where he was an A.P. Scholar with distinction as well as part of the 2008 Georgia 5A high school state championship squad. Since his commitment to Lehigh, Sulmonetti has been named to the Patriot League's Academic Honor Roll three times. This season, Taylor has made three appearances in goal, posting an .895 save percentage, while allowing just two goals over 209 minutes of action. Sulmonetti logged 45 minutes in net against the No. 1 Maryland Terrapins and played outstanding, making two spectacular saves, while stopping four shots on the night.
What's your favorite Lehigh men's soccer memory up until this point and why?
TS: "My favorite memory was traveling to California to play Stanford and the University of California at Berkeley my junior year. It was great to travel out to the West Coast to play two challenging teams, and enjoy the California weather with the team."
Describe the relationship with your fellow seniors.
TS: "I think we are very close because we have helped each other get through the tough times and enjoyed the good times throughout all four years. We are great teammates and great friends, and I could not think of anyone better to have played with my four years at Lehigh than Cam and Matt."
Describe the feeling going into Senior Day. What are some of the thoughts going through your mind as you're nearing the end of your collegiate career?
TS: "To be honest, I am not thinking too much about Senior Day. I really appreciate that Cam, Matt and I are being honored, but that is not the most important thing on my mind. I am thinking of how I can prepare the team and myself to get a win. It is a Patriot League game, and we need those three points to continue to have a chance to get into the tournament. A win against American at home would mean more."
What will you miss most about Lehigh men's soccer?
TS: "I will miss playing my favorite sport at such a highly competitive level."
What are your postgraduate plans?
TS: "I am not exactly sure what I want to do, but I am leaning towards going to graduate school to pursue an advanced degree in chemical engineering."
Matt Weaver - Back - Wilmette, Ill. - Global Studies
The two-time Illinois high school state champion continued to excel on the pitch after coming to Bethlehem in 2009. As a freshman, Weaver saw action in seven games, including three starts, but his role on the team has amplified each year as the senior has made 33 career starts in the brown and white coming into today's game. Weaver scored his first career goal on September 25, when with just 49 seconds to play against Penn State, he connected off a cross and ripped a shot into the back of the net to give the Mountain Hawks their first victory of the season in dramatic style. Weaver has been a three-time Patriot League Academic Honor Roll athlete at Lehigh, demonstrating his talent on the field as well as in the classroom.
What's your favorite Lehigh men's soccer memory up until this point and why?
MW: "My favorite Lehigh Men's soccer memory was our trip to California in which we tied Cal and beat Stanford. We came together as a squad and played our hearts out against two premiere teams in the country. Traveling with the guys is tons of fun and traveling in general is a part that I will greatly miss."
Describe the relationship with your fellow seniors.
MW: "Cam, Taylor and I are very close. Our class started with seven and we will end our senior year with three. It shows how tough it is for us to get to this point and I could not have done it without them. They have supported me day-in and day-out throughout my career and I gave both of them my full support. They will be my friends for the rest of my life."
Describe the feeling going into Senior Day. What are some of the thoughts going through your mind as you're nearing the end of your collegiate career?
MW: "It is bittersweet because I love soccer and have such a great passion for the game, but I am ready to move on in my life and experience different things and adapt to a different lifestyle. Soccer has taught me so many valuable lessons that I will carry with me to every other aspect of my life. I am so happy that I get to share that night with my family and teammates. It should be extremely special."
What will you miss most about Lehigh men's soccer?
MW: "I will miss the downtime with the team the most. I love to joke around with the guys and I did my best to develop close relationships with everyone on the squad, including the coaching staff and our trainer. The camaraderie is something I will deeply miss."
What are your postgraduate plans?
MW: "I plan on working in the finance industry preferably for a bank. I have applied to various banks
rotational programs and would love to get into wealth management."
Cameron Omsberg - Midfielder - Belgrade, Maine - Journalism
A two-time team captain for the Mountain Hawks, Omsberg has put together one of the most impressive careers in Lehigh men's soccer history. Cam came to Bethlehem from Belgrade, Maine where he was a high school team captain and MVP. Upon stepping on the field at Ulrich Sports Complex, Omsberg has twice been named to the Patriot League's Academic Honor Roll, received the Men's Soccer Coaches Award in 2010 and led the Mountain Hawks to Patriot League Tournament appearances in each of his first three years, as he and the rest of the team look to make it a perfect four times this season. Omsberg has started 42 games in the brown and white, anchoring one of the stingiest defenses in the Patriot League, as Lehigh has allowed just 21 goals over the 27 league games the Mountain Hawks have played since 2009.
What's your favorite Lehigh men's soccer memory up until this point and why?
CO:"The highlight of my career at Lehigh was our team's trip to California last year. We had a great trip by enjoying San Francisco and also tying Cal and beating Stanford which were great results for Lehigh's first ever trip to the West Coast. Getting to spend a few days in a great place with my best friends was incredible. I am hoping to change that highlight by winning the Patriot League Championship this year, which would top anything."
Describe the relationship with your fellow seniors.
CO: "Matt and Taylor have been great friends and two teammates I have been really close with the past four years. It means a lot for all three of us to finish our Lehigh careers together and I am very lucky to have made a lot of great friends over the past few years. Matt and Taylor are two of my best friends and guys I know I will be close with for life."
Describe the feeling going into Senior Day. What are some of the thoughts going through your mind as you're nearing the end of your collegiate career?
CO: "I am most focused on getting a much-needed win on Senior Night and knowing it is my last home game for Lehigh will make the game that much more important to me. I would love to have my last game at Ulrich end with a win and I have no doubt the team will come out and play as hard as we possibly can to get it."
What will you miss most about Lehigh men's soccer?
CO: "I will miss everything about Lehigh soccer, from practicing every day with my teammates to playing games and hanging out with the guys off the field. Being able to play for Lehigh is an honor and something I definitely will never forget. I feel very lucky to have been able to play four years here and I've loved every minute of it."
What are your postgraduate plans?
CO: "After I graduate, I am hoping to continue to play because aside from family and friends there is
nothing I love more and am more passionate about than soccer and I don't feel like I would be ready to step away from the game without trying to play at the next level."
