BETHLEHEM, Pa. – After Lehigh’s season came to an end in late April, Lehigh head coach Dave Shook announced his team awards for the recently completed season last month. The Mountain Hawks fell short of the Patriot League semifinals for the first time in seven years, falling to Colgate 4-1 in the opening round of the Patriot League tournament. A young Lehigh team that featured four newcomers finished 4-14 overall with wins over Patriot League rivals Holy Cross and Lafayette.
Senior Stacey Reich earned the Athlete of the Year award, which is presented to the member of the team who makes the most outstanding athletic contribution to the accomplishments of the team. Reich, who received the Coaches Award last season, tied for the team lead with six singles wins, going 6-12 at third singles, including 3-3 in Patriot League play. She also went 5-12 in doubles play alongside freshman Patricia Muething.
The Coaches Award, which is awarded to the individual who made significant contributions to the well being of the team in terms of attitude, improvement, or special leadership, was given to senior Julie Arthofer. As the first four-time All-Patriot League selection in Lehigh women’s tennis history and the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year award recipient, Arthofer battled through an injury-filled season to post a record of 5-12 at the No. 1 flight. She was also 5-13 in doubles play alongside sophomore Liz Piscitelli.
Muething was given the Scholar-Athlete Award, which is given to the student-athlete who in the eyes of his/her teammates exemplifies the ideal of the scholar-athlete. Muething went 6-11 in singles, playing primarily at the No. 4 flight. She went 5-12 in doubles play with Reich. In the classroom, Muething earned a GPA of 3.82 in the college of Business and Economics and will earn Patriot League Academic Honor Roll recognition for the 2010 season.
The Mountain Hawks lose just two players, Arthofer and Reich to graduation, but return six players who saw significant time for the 2010-11 season.
