Suarez named P.L. Scholar-Athlete of the Year

BETLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh senior Steve Suarez was named the 2010 Patriot League Men’s Golf Scholar-Athlete of the Year, it was announced on Thursday. The Mountain Hawks captain, who maintains a 3.56 grade point average as a Finance major, closed out his Lehigh career in grand style last weekend with a runner-up finish at the Patriot League championship. Suarez shot a 222 (70, 74, 78) over the course of 54 holes to place second in the tournament and for his efforts he received First-Team All-League recognition. Suarez is Lehigh’s third Scholar Athlete of the Year in men’s golf and first since John Logue in 1991.
Suarez, who was the 2007 Patriot League Rookie of the Year, shot an average of 77 during the 2010 spring season, with a low round of 70 on the first 18 holes at the Patriot League championship. In the fall of 2009, the New Jersey native shot an average of 77.8, including a low of 74 at the Cornell Invite. Suarez posted five top-25 finishes throughout course of the 2009-10 season, culminating with his second place finish at the league tournament.
Off the course Suarez is a multi-year member of the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll.
To be eligible for the Patriot League Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative grade point average and be a starter of key contributor in her/her sport. Freshmen are not eligible for the honor.
