BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh will once again try for its first win of the spring season this weekend as the Mountain Hawks will host a pair of matches at the Lewis Tennis Center. On Saturday, the Mountain Hawks will host the Red Foxes of Marist, while on Sunday Lehigh will host Drexel as the Brown and White continue their season-opening eight match home stand and look to stop their four-match slide.
The Mountain Hawks’ closest call came last Sunday as Lehigh led Mount St. Mary’s 3-2, but the Mountaineers rallied to win three-set matches at No. 5 and No. 6 singles to escape with the 4-3 victory. Lehigh captured the doubles point and picked up singles wins from senior Julie Arthofer and freshman Patricia Muething. That duo, plus freshman Gena Levengood have accounted for all of Lehigh’s singles wins this spring, as Lehigh has faced tough competition from the likes of Penn State, Mount St. Mary’s and Rutgers.
Marist opens its spring season on Saturday with its trip to Bethlehem. The Red Foxes were picked second in the MAAC preseason poll after losing in the semifinals of last year’s tournament. Marist has been to the NCAA tournament in two of the last three years.
On Sunday, Lehigh hosts a Drexel team that split its two spring matches after posting a 3-1 record in the fall. The Dragons dropped their spring opener to Penn but rallied to sweep St. Peter’s last weekend. Lehigh and Drexel have been meeting every season as of late. Drexel won last year’s meeting 4-3, while Lehigh prevailed 7-0 in 2008.
Action begins Saturday when Lehigh and Marist square off at 2 p.m. at the Lewis Tennis Center. The Mountain Hawks and Dragons will then face off Sunday at 10 a.m.
