BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women’s tennis team will try for the third time to play its third match of the season Friday afternoon when the Mountain Hawks host the Rutgers Scarlet Knights Friday afternoon inside the Lewis Tennis Center. The Mountain Hawks have been off since falling 7-0 to Fairleigh Dickinson at home on January 31. Last Saturday’s match with Radford was postponed due to snow and Wednesday’s scheduled match between Lehigh and Rutgers was moved to Friday because of another winter storm.
The Mountain Hawks are hoping to pick up their first victory of the season this weekend either against Rutgers or on Sunday when Lehigh hosts Mount St. Mary’s. Lehigh opened the season with a 5-2 home loss to Penn State before falling against FDU nearly two weeks ago. The Mountain Hawks remain in the midst of a season-opening eight match home stand.
Lehigh will look to senior Julie Arthofer to get things going out of the No. 1 singles and doubles spot. Arthofer dropped her first two singles and doubles matches of the season but is a returning first-team All-League performer. Freshman Gena Levengood owns Lehigh’s lone win of the season, with a triumph at No. 5 singles against Penn State.
On Friday, Lehigh will face a Rutgers team that is 1-1 this spring. The Scarlet Knights opened their season with a conference loss to Syracuse but rebounded to sweep Fairleigh Dickinson 7-0 back on February 4. Rutgers finished fourth in the Big East last season and returns eight letterwinners.
Sunday morning, the Mountaineers of Mount St. Mary’s will visit the Lewis Tennis Center to open their spring season and kick-off a women’s-men’s tennis doubleheader between the two schools. Mount St. Mary’s went 6-0 in dual matches during the fall and are led by Chelsea Johnson and Emily Bolchoz at the top two singles flights.
Action gets underway Friday at 1:30 p.m. when Lehigh hosts Rutgers at the Lewis Tennis Center. On Sunday, the Mountain Hawks will face the Mountaineers, with first serves set for 10 a.m.
