BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Still facing tough weather conditions, the Lehigh track and field teams bounced back to have strong showings on the final day of the Greyhound Invitational at Moravian on Saturday. Another record fell this weekend, as senior pole vaulter Ashlee Atwell vaulted 11’ 11.75” to set the new Lehigh outdoor record. The day was also highlighted by several student-athletes earning top-10 finishes in their respective events.

“I think we did pretty good today considering the circumstances,” head coach Matt Utesch said. “The wind was bad and it was real chilly out so the weather had a big impact on the meet.”

Atwell finished in second place in the pole vault and she now owns both the indoor and outdoor Lehigh pole vault records. Junior Emily Settle also had a big day, as she finished in third in the hammer throw with a distance of 167’ 10.0” to qualify for ECACs.

The only top finisher on the women’s side came in the high jump, as senior Kathryn McLaughlin tied for first with a jump of 5’ 3.0”. Sophomore Alexandra Doersam stayed busy on Saturday, as she finished fourth in both the long jump (17’ 8.25”) and 200 meter dash (26.84). Freshman Brittany Pietrosh ran a strong 800 meter race, finishing in fourth with a time of 2:18.60.

The women’s distance runners ran well at Moravian and were led by freshman Victoria Berard, who finished in fourth place in the 1,500 meters with a time of 4:56.17. Two other Mountain Hawks placed in the top-10: senior Dana Stellar (sixth) and sophomore Megan Hetzel (seventh). In the 5,000 meter run, Lehigh once again had three top-10 finishers, which was led by sophomore Carolyn Morse who finished in fourth with a time of 18:31.86. Senior Colleen Law (fifth) and her classmate Hana Baskin (seventh) were the other top finishers.

On the men’s side, junior Kyle O’Connor competed in his second race in as many days and came away with the top spot in the 800 meters with a season-best time of 1:54.11. Like the women’s team, the men also had three top-10 finishers in the 5,000 meters. Sophomore Daniel Soltan took third with a time of 15:39.57 and he was followed by junior Bryan Herbst who took fourth (15:40.32). His classmate Matthew Hilderbrandt rounded out the group by placing sixth.

“We’re headed in the right direction,” Utesch commented after Saturday’s action. “The teams are looking forward to the Penn Relays this upcoming week and then coming back and having a strong meet at our own Invitational.”

The Mountain Hawks have another busy week ahead, as they will travel to Philadelphia for the Penn Relays on Thursday and return home on Friday for the Lehigh games.
