Lehigh wraps up competition at Virginia Duals

2/14/2009 12:00:00 AM | Men's Track and Field, Track and Field, Women's Track and Field

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh competed for the second consecutive week at the famous New York Armory on Saturday in the Virginia Duals. The Mountain Hawks competed in three simultaneous duals against the host Virginia Cavaliers, Columbia and Cornell on the men’s side, and Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania on the women’s side.

Sarah Serwo broke another school record this week, after setting a new Lehigh mark in the 1,000 last week. This time, Serwo broke the school mark in the 800, just ahead of teammate Jen Therkorn, who also beat the previous record in the event.

“It says a lot about our depth in that event,” Lehigh head coach Matt Utesch said. “It makes a statement about our 4x800 team for the Patriot League Championships. And we know they can both go faster than that.”

Lehigh finished fourth overall, but Utesch said his team positioned itself to make a run at next week’s Patriot League Championships. Utesch intentionally ran his best athletes in only individual events so they could improve their marks in those races while resting for next week.

“We were looking for our kids to get pulled along to fast times against fast competition,” Utesch said. “That’s what happened tonight, so we were pleased.”

The Mountain Hawks will return to action next week when they head to Annapolis, Md. for the Patriot League Championships from Feb. 20-22. Utesch is excited about his teams progress and position with just six days to go until the biggest competition of the indoor season for the Brown and White.

“We are primed and ready to go,” Utesch said. “I think we’re in position to finish in the top three and that’s a goal.”
