Bethlehem, PA- The Lehigh women’s tennis team brought home some hardware this weekend at the Cornell Fall Invitational 2003. A-flight doubles team Kristen Nowicki and Rachel Samson dominated the field, giving Lehigh tennis its first tournament victory of the season. The weekend’s results gave head coach Dave Shook plenty of reasons to smile. "To win a tournament with the caliber teams that were there is phenomenal," said coach Shook. "Cornell, Syracuse, Rutgers, all have great teams. We were seeded fifth out of five, and to beat those teams is just a great step for our program." Making the win for Nowicki and Samson all the more impressive is the fact that they had never played together before. "For them to come in, having never shared the court before, and win, gives us great optimism for the future." Nowicki also competed in A-flight singles, but lost in a third-set tiebreak in the semis. Coach Shook said he learned a lot about his team over the course of the tournament. "We got a chance to get a closer look at four of our freshman, so that was good," said Shook. "But we also learned we are not in our best condition. So we will really be working to get in better shape in the coming weeks." Lehigh’s men’s tennis team was off this past weekend, but will travel to Vassar this coming weekend to take part in the ECAC North Championships.
