Lehigh’s men’s and women’s tennis teams hosted their first ever fall tournament last weekend and achieved terrific results. The inaugural Lehigh University Tennis Championships was contested September 6-7, as the Mountain Hawks welcomed Marist, Fairleigh Dickinson, Morgan State, and Bloomsburg to South Mountain. Lehigh played a total of 50 matches in the event, going an impressive 41-9, including winning seven of nine from Marist. "I never expected to do that (win so much against Marist)" said head coach Dave Shook, "they are ranked 13th in the region. So I am very impressed with the effort by my team." Lehigh was helped by the play of eleven newcomers, including nine new freshmen. "This was an early wake up call," said assistant coach Ryan Cann, a 2003 Lehigh graduate. "We only had one week of practice, but I thought we played superbly." The women’s team will participate in upcoming tournaments at Cornell, Princeton, and Virginia Tech. The men will also take to the road, traveling to Vassar, Brown, Army and Cornell.
