Mountain Hawks fall in season opener

Bethlehem, PA – Short handed and riddled with injury, the Lehigh women’s tennis team fell to Rutgers 6-1 Thursday afternoon at the Lewis Tennis Center. With the loss the Mountain Hawks fall to 0-1 on the season, while the Scarlet Knights improve to 1-0.
     

In first doubles the tandem of Kristen Nowicki and Kristin Mulstay was defeated by Rutgers’ Andrea Weckstein and Carisa Sommerland by a score of 8-4. Doubles action continued as Danielle Suchow and Andrea Scott faced Jennifer Hellier and Ketevan Shmakova. Hellier and Shmakova came away with an 8-2 victory. With only five available participants, the Mountain Hawks were forced to forfeit the third doubles match allowing Kaitlin Link and Alina Balasa to pick up an easy victory.
     

On the singles side Lehigh managed just one win. In first singles Nowicki defeated Weckstein 7-6, 6-4. It is the first win for Nowicki as a Mountain Hawk following her transfer from Penn State. In second singles Jamie Fass was upended 6-2, 6-0 by Hellier. The Scarlet Knights would go on to pick up victories in third, fourth, and fifth singles as well as a forfeit victory at sixth singles.
     

Lehigh returns to action Saturday at 4:00 p.m. vs. Stony Brook.
