It has not been an easy season for the Lehigh Women’s Tennis Team in 2002. Plagued with injuries and illnesses, the Mountain Hawks could have easily chalked up the season as a loss and given up. Instead, they did the opposite. The Lehigh women fought hard to the end of the season, recording a 12-6 overall record, with a tough loss to American in the first round of the Patriot League Championship. Junior Rachel Samson recorded an impressive 8-4 record at number one singles despite a season full of injuries. Senior captain Erica Feinman held on strong for her last season of collegiate play, with a 7-5 record at number two singles and 2-1 at number the one spot. Junior Andrea Scott triumphed with a strong 6-1 record at number six, 3-0 at number five. Three freshmen have been surprise stars this season as well. Maria Anorga, Jaime Fass and Kristin Mulstay all demonstrated strong play in singles action in their first season as collegiate tennis players. Anorga, 2-0 at number two, 1-2 at third and 2-3 at the fifth spot achieved this impressive record despite an injury that kept her out for several weeks of the season. Fass stepped up to the challenge, recording 2-0 at number one, 2-1 at number two, 6-4 at three and 1-1 in the fourth spot. Mulstay showed what she was made of with 2-1 at number three, 0-1 at four and 1-0 at fifth. The All-Patriot League duo, Samson and Feinman, illustrated why they were bestowed those honors, by dominating at the first doubles spot all season, with a 12-5 record. Mulstay and Fass (both freshmen) surprised everyone in their first year, with an 8-6 season record at number three doubles. As the season comes to an end, the team will suffer the loss of its two captains, Erica Feinman and Meggan Dencker, both four-year players. However, with the strength and power demonstrated by the newcomers, it is clear that Lehigh Women’s Tennis is a team with a promising future.
