Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh dropped its first match of the season to a very deep and talented Rutgers team 6-1 on Tuesday afternoon at the Lewis Tennis Center. The Mountain Hawks fell to 2-1 on the season with the loss while the Scarlet Knights improved to 4-2 overall. Rachel Samson picked up the lone team point for Lehigh as she defeated Carissa Sommerlad at number one singles. It was a long match that lasted three sets with Samson winning the first and third sets by a 6-3 margin. Number two singles also lasted three sets as Erica Feinman battled Jennifer Hellier before losing the first and third sets 6-4. Feinman won the second set 7-6 but could not hold the momentum in the third set. Rutgers won the remaining singles flights in straight sets but Lehigh recorded lost only one game 6-0 and one 6-1. All of the other games had at least 6-3 scores. Samson and Feinman combined for Lehigh’s only win in doubles. The duo outlasted Sommerlad and Amanda Travlos 9-7 in a seesaw match that went down to the wire. Both teams recorded several athletic plays and refused to quit. Samson and Feinman upped their record to 3-0 on the season as a doubles pair. Lehigh returns to action on Sunday when it hosts Towson at the Lewis Tennis Center beginning at 1:00. Singles
