BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Lehigh women’s tennis team reached the Patriot League semifinals for the sixth straight season in 2009. The Mountain Hawks went 6-11 this past season, but three of the wins came against Patriot League opposition, including a win over rival Lafayette in the opening round of the Patriot League tournament. Last month, head coach Dave Shook handed out his team awards from the recently completed season.
Junior Julie Arthofer garnered a pair of team awards, winning the Outstanding Athlete Award, which is presented to the member of the team who makes the most outstanding athletic contribution to the accomplishments of the team, and the Scholar-Athlete Award, given to the student-athlete who in the eyes of his/her teammates exemplifies the ideal of the scholar-athlete.
On the court, Arthofer earned All-Patriot League honors for the third straight year by earning her first first-team nod. Arthofer was 8-9 in singles play including 8-4 at the No. 3 flight and 4-0 in Patriot League play. The Naperville, Illinois native was also 8-9 in doubles play alongside freshman Liz Piscitelli. In the classroom, Arthofer carries a 3.82 cumulative grade point average as an economics major and posted a 3.92 GPA in the recently completed spring semester.
The Coaches Award, which is awarded to the individual who made significant contributions to the well being of the team in terms of attitude, improvement, or special leadership, was given to junior Stacey Reich. The Georgia native was one of Lehigh’s most consistent performers last season, tying for the team lead with eight singles wins, while adding a team-best 9-6 doubles record. Reich played primarily No. 5 singles and No. 3 doubles for the Mountain Hawks.
Arthofer and Reich will be counted upon to lead Lehigh in 2010, as the two seniors on a team that returns just four players overall.
