WEST POINT, N.Y. – Lehigh continued its fall season at the Eastern Intercollegiate Championships hosted by Army at several venues throughout the weekend. The Mountain Hawks entered six players in four singles and one doubles championship flights in this, the second event of Lehigh’s fall campaign which began Friday and concluded on Sunday.
The Mountain Hawks top two players, seniors Allie Schwartz and Ariela Cohen focused exclusively on doubles, posting a 1-1 record at the top flight of doubles. Schwartz and Cohen won their opening round match, defeating Rutta Byron and Emily Zampello of Marist 8-2. In the quarterfinals, Lehigh’s duo was ousted by Barbara Couto and Carmen Jackman of UMBC 8-5.
Singles play was not as kind to Lehigh as four Mountain Hawks combined to go 1-7 in four flights. Senior Victoria Vityuk won her round of 32 match at No. 4 singles, beating Carly Lowenstein of Quinnipiac 6-1, 6-2, before falling to Anna Pieschl of Stony Brook in the round of 16. Also representing Lehigh on the weekend were senior Ruthie Furman, who played No. 1 singles, freshman Liz Piscitelli who played No. 2 and junior Stacey Reich who competed at No. 3 singles.
On Sunday, Lehigh entered a pair of doubles teams in a back draw, with Furman and Piscitelli teaming for a win, and Reich and Vityuk dropping their lone match.
The Mountain Hawks’ fall season concludes at the ITA Regionals in New Haven, Connecticut, beginning October 18.
