PHILADELPHIA - Seeds and brackets for the 105th EIWA Championships were announced Friday evening, following a meeting of the conference’s head coaches. Nine of the ten Lehigh tournament entrants earned seeds, led by junior David Craig who earned the top seed at 184. Coaches seed the top eight wrestlers in every weight class.
On the strength of his 3-2 win over Harvard’s Louis Caputo, Craig earned the No. 1 seed for the second time in as many EIWA tournaments entered. Craig will face John Drew of Army, who he beat my major decision in a dual meet earlier this season.
Two Mountain Hawks earned No. 2 seeds, with junior Seth Ciasulli nabbing the second spot at 141 and freshman Zach Rey earning the second seed at 285. Ciasulli will open up against Adam Healey of Bucknell, a wrestler he pinned in a dual last month, while Rey is one of four Lehigh wrestlers to receive a first-round bye. Rey will face either No. 7 seed Zach Hammond of Cornell or American’s Quinton Pruett in the quarterfinals.
Four Mountain Hawks were seeded third in their respective weight classes. Both of Lehigh’s co-captains earned No. 3 seeds as junior Matt Fisk drew East Stroudsburg’s Matt Swallow at 133 and senior Trevor Chinn will face Al Gianforti of Franklin & Marshall at 149. Lehigh’s other two No. 3 seeds earned first round byes. Junior Mike Galante will face the winner of Andy Lowy of Princeton and No. 6 Eren Civan of Columbia at 165 and freshman Joe Kennedy will meet either No. 6 Thomas Shovlin of Penn or Nathan Jones of Bucknell at 197.
At 174 sophomore Alex Caruso earned the No. 5 seed and will face Andy Olsen of Harvard in the first round.
Freshman John McDonald earned the lowest seed of any Lehigh wrestler, coming in at No. 8 at 125. McDonald will likely face Cornell’s Troy Nickerson, the No. 1 seed in the quarterfinals.
The only Lehigh wrestler not to earn a seed is freshman Sean Bilodeau, who was dropped from a top-8 seed following Friday’s meeting. Bilodeau will open up against Rutgers freshman Scott Winston, the No. 4 seed at 157.
Complete brackets are available via the link above.
