Two Mountain Hawks Reach Semifinals, Two Others To Wrestle For All-America Honors Friday Night

PHILADELPHIA – Two Lehigh wrestlers secured spots in Friday night's semifinals, while two others will wrestle for All-America honors Friday night following session three of the NCAA Championships at Wells Fargo Arena.

Junior Sheldon Seymour started the day by knocking off top seed Luke Lilledahl of Penn State in the quarterfinals to secure his spot on the podium and in the semifinals at 125.

Graduate student heavyweight Owen Trephan joined Seymour in advancing in the championship bracket with a quarterfinal win over Iowa's Ben Kueter.

The Mountain Hawks' two semifinalists are guaranteed a top-six finish.

Lehigh finished session three with 26 points, which has the Mountain Hawks tied for 11th place with Virginia Tech.

Seymour avenged a December loss to Lilledahl with a 2-2 tiebreaker victory that was decided on 14 seconds of riding time. The No. 8 seeded Mountain Hawk successfully defended quality shots from Lilledahl in the third period and overtime. Tied 1-1 in the tiebreakers, Seymour escaped after 12 seconds in the first half and successfully riding out the second half, conceding only a penalty point for stalling. In the semifinals, Seymour will face No. 4 Vincent Robinson of NC State.

Trephan won to give Lehigh multiple semifinalists for the first time since 2012 when the Mountain Hawks had three. The fourth-seeded Trephan escaped to open the second period and then took down No. 5 seed Kueter and took a 4-1 lead into the third. A Kueter escape in the third would be the final point of the bout as Trephan defended successfully and earns the eighth All-American award for a Lehigh heavyweight in 17 seasons under Pat Santoro.

The third Lehigh quarterfinalist, senior Michael Beard, came up short of a semifinal bid against Penn State's Josh Barr. The fourth-seeded Nittany Lion posted a 14-3 major decision over No. 5 Beard, who will now wrestle No. 15 Joseph Novak of Wyoming Friday evening for a spot on the podium.

Senior Malyke Hines won twice Friday to reach the round of 12 for the second time in his career. Trailing 6-5 in the third period, Hines scored a takedown and two-point near fall to defeat Northern Iowa's Colin Realbuto 10-7. Hines then scored a pair of first period takedowns and added one more in the third to defeat Oklahoma State's Teague Travis 12-6. In the round of 12, Hines will face Ethan Stiles of Oregon State.

True first-year Logan Rozynski's season ended Friday with a 1-0 loss to Northern Iowa's Ryder Downey. The only point came from a third period Downey escape as Rozynski was unable to covert several good shot attempts in the first two periods. The EIWA champion's season concludes with a 19-7 record.

The NCAA Championships continue Friday night with session four beginning at 8 p.m. The session will feature the championship semifinals, All-America round of 12 and consolation quarterfinals. It will be televised on ESPN2 with streaming video of every mat available on ESPN+.
