Lehigh Places Three in Quarterfinals, Advances Five to Day Two at NCAAs

PHILADELPHIA – Lehigh wrestlers went 3-for-3 in Thursday night's championship round of 16 and advanced five of its six qualifiers to day two at the NCAA Championships at Wells Fargo Center.

Junior Sheldon Seymour (125), senior Michael Beard (197) and graduate student Owen Trephan (285) will all compete in Friday's championship quarterfinals, while senior Malyke Hines (141) and first-year Logan Rozynski (157) remain alive in consolations.

The Mountain Hawks finished the first day of the championships in 12th place with 11 team points.

Seymour got the session started with a 7-3 decision over Nebraska's Caleb Smith. Trailing 1-0 late in the second, Seymour countered a Smith cement mixer attempt for a takedown and three-point near fall to lead 6-1 after two. He escaped to open the third period and conceded two stalling points but held on for the victory. Seymour will now meet the No. 1 seed Luke Lilledahl of Penn State in the quarterfinals.

Beard avenged a loss to Little Rock's Stephen Little in last year's seventh place match by winning a 4-1 decision Thursday night. Beard escaped to open the second period and converted a single leg shot for the only takedown of the bout. He will also face a Penn State opponent in the quarterfinals in No. 4 seed Josh Barr.

Trephan moved to 23-0 on the season with an 8-3 decision over Maryland's Seth Nevills. He scored a takedown in each of the first two periods and added a second period escape, plus riding time. Trephan will face Iowa's Ben Kueter in the quarterfinals on Friday.

Hines remains alive in the consolations at 149 after winning a 7-3 decision over Mason Shrader of Central Michigan. Two first-period takedowns staked Hines to a 6-2 lead and he held on from there.

Rozynski picked up his first career win at the NCAA Tournament by beating Oregon State's Christopher Hamblin 7-3. A first period takedown and second period escape had Rozynski in front, with the first-year icing the victory with a takedown in the final seconds.

Both Hines and Rozynski will face opponents from Northern Iowa in the second round consolations.

The lone Lehigh wrestler eliminated Thursday was sophomore Caden Rogers. In his first round consolation bout against North Carolina's Gavin Kane at 184, Rogers was tied 1-1 in the third period when Kane took Rogers down to his back for seven points. Rogers' sophomore season ends at 15-8.
Three-time defending national champion Penn State went 20-for-20 in matches Thursday to take an early lead in the team race.

The 2025 NCAA Championships continue Friday with session three, featuring the quarterfinals and two rounds of consolations, beginning at 12 p.m. Session three will be televised on ESPNU with streaming video of every mat available on ESPN+.
