''Getting the ball on the green is skill. Getting it in the hole is luck,'' said Gutshall, an inaugural member of the Lehigh Valley Golf Hall of Fame. ''It's only luck because no one can predict they're going to have a hole in one.''
He used to own and operate the former Gutshall Chevrolet dealership in Hellertown. As he was winding down that business, he became, at 65, the men's golf coach for Lehigh in 1990. He added Lehigh women's golf coaching duties in 2001.
Gutshall retired as coach in 2006 but is back on campus as manager of a new golf practice range being built at Lehigh.
''I need to do something to stay busy,'' he said. ''This is what keeps me in the game. And I play every day.''
Gutshall has shot his age or better more than 500 times, including a 76 he carded Monday at Wedgewood and a 77 on Tuesday at
