Lehigh’s men’s golf team swung into their fall season last weekend with a third place finish at the Navy Fall Invitational, in Annapolis, MD. The Mountain Hawks finished 21 strokes over par after the two-day event, falling short to only Vanderbilt and the University of Pennsylvania.
"We beat some teams that have been having their way with us," an excited head coach Kelly Gutshall said "I know that the attitude and chemistry was the best we could have expected."
There is no mystery to the source of coach Gutshall’s excitement, as Lehigh’s combined score of 289 after the first day of the tournament was the best single day score that Gutshall has seen his team tally in his twelve years here at Lehigh.
Lehigh’s golfers stepped it up in the absence of their top player, Bowen Osborn, whose dislocated shoulder has him sidelined. When asked how long Osborn will be out for, Gutshall said that he didn’t want him to play until he could go 100 percent.
Rob Mcmenimon and John Jaravata led the way, each shooting only four strokes over par after three rounds at the U.S. Naval Academy Golf Course. Mike Eglit pitched in with a six over 148, and Ron Kashlak helped with a 149.
The play of Jaravata (73, 73-146) was especially encouraging, as it was the freshman’s first collegiate competition. "This was a tremendous start for this young man’s college career," Gutshall said of the impressive rookie.
The Mountain Hawks continue their season next weekend at the Bucknell Invitational in Lewisburg, PA.
