Lehigh opens its 2008 fall season this weekend as the Mountain Hawks head west to Lewisburg to compete in the Bucknell Invitational. Lehigh was last in action in April when the Brown and White finished third at the Patriot League Championship. Joining the Mountain Hawks in Lewisburg this weekend will be Colgate, Lafayette, Fordham, Robert Morris, St. Peter’s, Canisius, Susquehanna, Laval, Ottawa and the host Bison. All three rounds will be played at the Bucknell Golf Club, a par-70, 6,253 yard layout located adjacent to Bucknell’s campus.
After finishing third at the Patriot League Championship last season, Lehigh will look to make a push towards the top in 2008-09. All of the pieces to achieve that goal are in place with seniors Will Robinson and Shane Gilroy along with junior Steve Suarez and sophomores Duncan Zeiders and Dwight D’Ioraio returning after each played a significant role in 2007-08.
"I am very excited about the upcoming season,” head coach Henry D’Alberto commented. “With our core of Will, Steve and Shane returning, we now have the leadership and experience to be able to contend on a regular basis. The team is starting to come together and with a strong bond you can achieve team goals.”
Robinson, Suarez, or
All three finished in the top 15 at the 2008 Patriot League Championship, led by Robinson who shot a 239 and finished 11th overall. Suarez was just one stroke behind at 240 and finished in a 12th place tie, while
Suarez, who was honored as the 2007-2008 Scholar-Athlete Award winner, was a top finisher for Lehigh three times, including a tie for fourth place at the Lehigh Invitational.
Zeiders had a solid start to his Lehigh career as a freshman posting a trio of top-40 finishes, including a 32nd place finish at the Patriot League Championship where he shot a 252.
As a freshman, D’Iorio placed in the top-25 at the Patriot League Championship after shooting a three round total of 249, while his one round score of 87 helped lead the Mountain Hawks to the Lehigh Valley Invite team championship.
Under D’Alberto, the Mountain Hawks finished first at the Lehigh Valley Collegiate Invitational and posted the program’s first top-three Patriot League Championship finish in four years. Lehigh will look to use that momentum along with the returning talent it has and blend in some talented newcomers to form the core of what should be the strongest team the program has fielded since D’Alberto returned to his alma mater in 2006.
Included among those newcomers are Doug Marcincin from nearby Liberty High School and Tim Rosenhouse who attended Half Hollow Hills West in New York. Marcincin was the Express-Times 2008 Golfer of the Year as well as a two time Lehigh Valley Conference All-Star. Marcincin is coming off a very strong summer season in which he competed versus top competition in numerous tournaments. Rosenhouse meanwhile qualified for the Long Island Open and New York State High School Championship during his senior year in high school and finished fourth at the CJGA World Junior Challenge. Rosenhouse, who was an Academic All-County selection, played in six AJGA Tournaments.
Junior Dylan Evans also returns this season after seeing limited action in 2007-08.
"I think with the recruited players and returning players working hard over the summer that Lehigh has a chance to get back on top,” D’Alberto said.
