BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh travels to Coca-Cola Park, home of the International League’s Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs, to face the Muhlenberg Mules Tuesday afternoon as part of the Alvin H. Butz Inc. Lehigh Valley Collegiate Baseball Showcase. The Mountain Hawks will be looking to stop an eight game slide against their cross-town Division III rivals. The game also kicks off a busy week of action on the diamond for Lehigh, which will host Penn in a doubleheader on Wednesday in the final non-league games of the regular season.
The Mountain Hawks will be looking to rebound from a four-game series sweep at the hands of Army last weekend at the baseball field on Goodman Campus. The Black Knights completed the sweep with wins on Sunday by scores of 5-2 and 21-8. Army led 21-0 in the eighth inning before Lehigh rallied for eight runs in the bottom of the ninth. Sophomore Austin Borden doubled in a run and freshman Joe Conaway singled home two more for the Mountain Hawks, who also were able to capitalize on some erratic Army pitching and defense in the ninth inning.
Senior Geoff Campbell continues to lead the Mountain Hawks with a .345 batting average. Campbell also paces the Mountain Hawks with 51 hits and is among the team leaders with 17 RBI. Campbell is followed by sophomores Andy Russell and Kevin Mihalik who are batting .306 and .302 on the season, respectively. Russell leads the Brown and White in homers (four) and RBI (28).
Muhlenberg comes into Tuesday’s contest with a record of 13-20-1 overall and 7-9 in the Centennial Conference. The Mules went 4-2 last weekend, splitting games with Dickinson and Johns Hopkins before sweeping a Sunday doubleheader against McDaniel. Top offensive threats for Muhlenberg include junior Eric Pomroy (.350, 1 HR, 26 RBI), seniors Christian Conti (.347, 4, 19) and Ed Risener (.303, 4, 27).
These two teams last met in 1995, with Lehigh earning a 12-3 road victory. Lehigh leads the all-time series 64-47.
First pitch for Tuesday’s game is set for 4:05 p.m. from Coca-Cola Park in Allentown. The game will be televised live on Service Electric 2 Sports as well as Fox College Sports Atlantic. Live video of the tilt will also be streamed online at Lehighsports.com.
