Lehigh (7-21, 3-9 PL) relief pitcher Max Treonze earned his first win of the season after striking out six batters while allowing only one earned run in 4.1 innings of work. Brandon Coughlin picked up the save after pitching 2.0 scoreless innings. Navy (18-12, 5-7 PL) reliever Tyler Grenn was tagged with the loss after conceding four runs in 3.2 innings of relief.
The game began with a pair of scoreless innings from each side. The Mountain Hawks broke the 0-0 tie in the top of the third, plating two runs on RBIs from Aidan Quinn and Owen Walewander to take a 2-0 lead. However, a two-RBI double from Navy's Victor Izquierdo and three-run homer from Patrick Walsh gave the Midshipmen a 5-2 advantage after the bottom of the third.
After allowing three runs in the bottom of the third, the Mountain Hawks stormed back in the fourth. Ryan Davis sent two runs past home plate with a two-RBI double before Ryan Cochran's RBI groundout tied the game at 5-5.
Treonze, who entered the game in the third, kept the Mids off the board in the fourth inning despite Navy putting runners on second and third. Lehigh and Navy then traded scoreless innings in the fifth and sixth frames before Will Howard gave the Mids a 6-5 lead on an RBI single in the bottom of the seventh.
Trailing by one with six outs remaining, Lehigh's offense came up huge in the final two innings. The Mountain Hawks plated four runs in the top of the eighth before Coughlin entered the game on the mound in the bottom of the inning. After Coughlin retired the side 1-2-3, RBIs from Robbie Carvelli and Jack Frankovic pushed Lehigh's lead to five in the top of the ninth. The Mountain Hawks then forced a double play in the bottom of the ninth to close out the victory.
Quinn, Trystan Crawford, and Ian Wirtz each tallied two hits on the day, with Quinn and Crawford each notching two doubles. Carvelli and Davis each batted in two runs while Edwin Betances and Silvio Giardina also recorded hits for the Mountain Hawks. Jake Mulvehill started on the mound for Lehigh.
The Mountain Hawks return to J. David Walker Field on Tuesday, April 7 at 3 p.m. to take on Delaware in the Liberty Bell Classic consolation game.
