BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh baseball welcomed the Delaware Blue Hens to J. David Walker Field on Tuesday afternoon for the round two consolation game of the Liberty Bell Classic. The Mountain Hawks defeated the Blue Hens 8-3 to win their second game in a row.
In his first career start, Jackson Shepelsky earned the win for Lehigh (8-21, 3-9 PL) after striking out five batters while allowing only one hit and zero runs in 4.0 innings. Delaware (10-23, 1-11 CUSA) starting pitcher Matt Reyes was credited with the loss after being tagged for five earned runs in 1.1 innings of work.
After a scoreless first inning on both sides, Lehigh took the lead in the second. A Max Dantoni bases loaded walk sent the first run across the plate before Aidan Quinn cleared the bases with a double to right field to extend the lead to four. Trystan Crawford then singled home Quinn to give Lehigh a 5-0 run after the second inning.
The Mountain Hawks added another run in the third on an RBI double from Silvio Giardina. Crawford then delivered a solo home run to left field in the bottom of the fourth that gave Lehigh a 7-0 advantage.
The Blue Hens got on the board in the top of the sixth thanks to an RBI groundout from Sam Winsett. Delaware continued to cut into the Lehigh lead in the top of the eighth on another Winsett RBI and a run from a wild pitch. However, reliever Cole Kochanowicz got the outs necessary down the stretch to secure the win for Lehigh.
Robbie Carvelli had a big day at the plate, going 3-5 with two runs scored and a double. Owen Walewander, Crawford, and Giardina each finished the day with two hits while Quinn, Ian Wirtz, Ryan Davis, and Dom Patrizi also got hits for the Mountain Hawks. Noah Gyauch-Quirk appeared on the mound in addition to Shepelsky and Kochanowicz.
The Mountain Hawks return to J. David Walker Field this weekend for a four-game series with the Army West Point Black Knights. Game one is slated for 3 p.m. on Friday, April 10.
