BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Mountain Hawks completed a clean sweep over archrival Lafayette on Saturday in Rauch Field House, grabbing victories on both the men’s and women’s sides in indoor track and field. After rattling off a sweep in cross country in the fall, Lehigh extended its winning streak over the Leopards with a 101-80 win on the women’s side and a 96-85 win on the men’s side.

“It’s the rivalry,” Lehigh head coach Matt Utesch said. “It’s a great feeling and a huge accomplishment. It really makes a statement about who we are and the future of this team.”

The women Mountain Hawks won 11 events en route to its highest point total in 21 years against Lafayette. The Brown and White had not cracked the century mark against the Leopards since 1988. The women had seven different athletes win individual events, and Sarah Serwo and Latasha Watson each won two events. Serwo won the 400 meters and 1,000 meters, and Watson put up dominating performances in the 60 meter and 200 meters.

“We were in control of the meet from the beginning through the entire meet,” Utesch said. “As we started to get into the track events we just took over.”

Watson also threw down the hammer in the final leg of the 4X400 meter relay, where Lehigh dealt a crushing blow to the Leopards.

“She handed them the nail in the coffin,” Utesch said. “It was just awesome, and it was every cliche you could think of. It made a statement to the whole team.”

On the men’s side, Lehigh also won 11 events, with E.J. Schuck leading the way with three individual wins, in the high jump, long jump and 60 meter hurdles. Nick Ray joined Schuck as a multiple winner with titles in the weight throw and shot put.

After the win, Utesch said Lehigh’s recent dominance does nothing to quiet the rivalry between the schools.

“It just heats it up,” he said. “They’re not used to losing, and they’re not happy.”

Lehigh returns to action next week as the teams split up to head to both Princeton and the New Balance Invitational in New York City.
