E.J. Schuck scored 4,998 points in the heptathlon to record a second-place finish to qualify for IC4A Championships and set a new Lehigh school record. He won the long jump portion of the multi-event with a jump of 23’ 2 1/2” to earn some valuable points. The jump qualified him for IC4A Championships in the long jump as well and made him the top long-jumper in the Patriot League this season.
“E.J. had a great day,” Utesch said. “It was such an all-around performance. He even ran a solid 1,000 to finish second overall, and he’s not a middle-distance runner by any stretch of the imagination.”
Catherine Bigelow scored 2,980 points to control the pentathlon on Friday night. She finished 95 points ahead of Kerriann Borke from
“We were very pleased with her day,” Lehigh head coach Matt Utesch said. “It kind of set a positive tone for us going forward this weekend.”
Jon Wetzel was the top runner in the 5,000 meters, a field dominated by Mountain Hawks. His 15:13.95 time put him less than two seconds ahead of the nearest finisher, and eight Lehigh runners made the top 10 in the field.
Sara Serwo and Jen Therkorn battled against each other to be the next Lehigh athlete to record a first-place finish in the women’s 500 meters. Serwo just barely edged out Therkorn for the crown, finishing in 1:18.01, just 0.53 seconds ahead of her teammate.
“That really exemplified their four years here at Lehigh in 500 meters, with the two of them competing at a high level neck-and-neck,” Utesch said. “It was great to see two seniors doing such a great job.”
Scott Robinson crossed the line in 8.55 seconds in the 60 meter hurdles to take second place, while Stephen Abate also finished second in the mile with a time of 4:28.10. Freshman distance runner Katherine Pierce followed up her win last week with a second-place finish in the 3,000 with a time of 10:52.20. Nick Ray put up a personal best throw of 51’ 11 1/4” to finish second overall.
“It was good to see some seniors step up today,” Utesch said. “Our freshmen have been coming up strong all year, but the upperclassmen are really starting to show what they can do now.”
Lehigh returns to action next week when the Mountain Hawks host the Lafayette Dual at Rauch Field House, starting on Saturday at 3 p.m.
