Lehigh MSoc loses first game to South Carolina

9/12/2008 12:00:00 AM | Men's Soccer

COLUMBIA, S.C.South Carolina delivered the Mountain Hawks their first loss of 2008 Friday night, 3-0, in the first game of the adidas Gamecock Classic.

Sam Arthur led the charge for the Gamecocks, scoring two goals in the first half to give South Carolina a 2-0 lead at the break.  Arthur’s goals in the 13th and 15th minutes put the Mountain Hawks in a deep hole early in the game, and they were unable to climb out.

“Giving up that goal kind of took the wind out of our sails a little,” Lehigh head coach Dean Koski said.  “It took us a little while to recover.”

The Mountain Hawks would recover to play a solid rest of the match.  Kevin Strunk stepped in for the injured James Graf and gave Lehigh some solid minutes.  Koski said Kyle Evans and Jim Taranto actually played some of their best games of the season despite not scoring from either forward position.

Still, Jeff Scannella put the exclamation point on the victory for the Gamecocks in the 82nd minute when he scored the Gamecocks’ third goal of the match.

“We certainly had a number of good chances to get things going,” Koski said.  “I’m disappointed with the result, but I’m not disappointed with the effort of the team.”

The loss moves Lehigh’s record to 3-1-1 on the season and snaps the team’s non-conference winning streak at 10 games.  The Mountain Hawks had not lost to a non-conference opponent since September 1, 2007, when they fell to Drexel, 3-2, in overtime.

Lehigh was held scoreless for the first time in 2008.  The Mountain Hawks had averaged 2.61 goals per game in their first four matches before Friday night.

Lehigh returns to action on Sunday at noon when they take on the Blue Hose of Presbyterian.  Go to Lehighsports.com for live stats of the match.
