Mountain Hawks drop second straight in S.C.

COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Lehigh men’s soccer team lost its second match of the weekend at the adidas Gamecock Classic on Sunday.  This time, the Mountain Hawks fell to the Presbyterian Blue Hose, 1-0, at the home stadium of the South Carolina Gamecocks.

Michael Czulinski drove home a goal in the 59th minute to give the Blue Hose the lead, and Lehigh could not find an answer in the closing minutes.

“I think we really struggled in the first half to match their work rate,” Lehigh head coach Dean Koski said.  “They did a pretty good job of disrupting us, and we could not match their intensity.”

The Mountain Hawks had their opportunities in the first half, outshooting the Blue Hose 5-0 in the initial period and 7-3 overall.  But out of those five shots, only one was put on goal, making for an easy day for the Presbyterian keeper.

The loss moves Lehigh’s record to 3-2-1 on the season.  After starting out with a four-game unbeaten streak, the Mountain Hawks will make the trip home from Columbia with two-consecutive losses.

“They have to get over it,” Koski said of the losses.  “They have to put it behind them.  We learned a lot this weekend, and in many respects, that’s a good thing.”

The Brown and White had yet to face any real adversity in 2008, and Koski said this may keep them grounded.

“We’ll take a lot of positives out of this weekend,” Koski said.  “It will force us to be more thoughtful, and ultimately these games are all to prepare us for the Patriot League competition.”

The Mountain Hawks will return home for a match against Fairleigh Dickinson Saturday, September 20 at 7 p.m. at the Ulrich Sports Complex.
