BETHLEHEM, Pa.Christy Smith, a two-sport standout who graduated from Lehigh in May was named an ESPN the Magazine Third-Team Academic All-American on Thursday.  Smith earned five total All-Patriot League selections between field hockey and lacrosse during her playing days and garnered a spot on the Academic All-District Team in each of the past two years.  An integrated business and industrial engineering major, Smith graduated from Lehigh with highest honors and a 3.89 grade point average.  Smith is one of just two Patriot League student-athletes that made the teams and she becomes the second Lehigh student-athlete to be named an Academic All-American in the past two weeks, joining rising senior Lisa Sweeney from the softball program.

“This is a wonderful honor for Christy and certainly well-deserved,” Julie Mazer, who coached Smith in field hockey for the last four years explained.  “Christy has served as a role model for all student-athletes throughout her time at Lehigh and we’re both proud and excited that she was honored as an Academic All-American.”

On the lacrosse field, Smith is a two time All-Patriot League selection who scored 88 goals during her four years in the Brown and White to go along with 26 assists and 154 ground balls.  During the 2008 season, Smith led the Mountain Hawks in ground balls, ranked fifth in draw controls and sixth in points and goals.  Smith was honored as the 2007 and 2008 Patriot League Women’s Lacrosse Scholar Athlete of the Year.

Smith was named the 2007 Patriot League Field Hockey Offensive Player of the Year after scoring eight goals, including the game winner in all three of the Mountain Hawks Patriot League victories this season, to go along with five assists, 21 points, and 53 shots.  A three time All-League honoree and two time All-Region selection in field hockey, Smith became the first Mountain Hawk in six years to be selected to the NFHCA Senior All-Star Game and finished her career with 22 goals, 11 assists and 55 points.

Smith is a multi-year member of the Dean’s List, the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, and the NFHCA All-Academic Team.  She was honored as the Lehigh Athletic Department’s Graduating Scholar Athlete Award winner in April, the highest honor given out by the department.
