2/28/2008 12:00:00 AM | Women's Lacrosse

PHILADELPHIA – Freshman Lauren Dykstra netted a career-high four goals as Lehigh downed LaSalle 13-10 on Thursday afternoon to improve to 3-1 in the early going of the 2008 season.  With the loss LaSalle remains winless at 0-2.  Freshman Allison Thomas added three goals, while sophomore Inneke Carmola and junior Sara MacIntyre both scored two goals for the Mountain Hawks.  Sophomore Kelsy Ferris made ten saves in goal to register her third win of the year.

Lehigh out shot the Explorers 31-29 for the game led by Dykstra’s 11 attempts, while Carmola unleashed six attempts of her own.  Both teams were credited with just eight ground balls, with Jen Ingalls, Thomas and Tess McGrath scooping up two apiece for the Brown and White.  Lehigh converted 12 of its 17 clear attempts and caused 11 Explorer turnovers, while as a team the Mountain Hawks were four-of-eight on free position shots.

Emily Bonczek opened the game with a goal at the 25:09 mark, but Carmola came right back and tied things at one less than two minutes later.  Two straight scores by the home team put LaSalle ahead 3-1, but Thomas found the back of the net with 17:32 to go in the half which made the score 3-2.  Following an Allie Venuti score to put the Explorers back up two at 4-2 Lehigh unleashed five straight goals, including one each from Dykstra, MacIntyre, Christy Smith, Meghan Tranter and Carmola to surge in front 7-4 at the 5:16 mark of the first half.

LaSalle came right back though and scored three unanswered goals to tie the game at seven as the teams headed into halftime.

Dykstra opened the second half with her second score of the afternoon to put the visitors back up one at 8-7, but back-to-back LaSalle goals made the score 9-8 at the 23:57 mark.  Dykstra struck again, this time with 23:33 left in the game and the score was tied once more, this time at nine.

Bonczek scored for the fifth time with 22:10 left to play and the Explorers enjoyed the lead one more time, but it was short lived as Thomas scored at the 21:36 mark to tie the contest at ten.  Thomas then scored again with 12:05 remaining and MacIntyre and Dykstra put the game out of reach with a pair of goals in the final ten minutes.

Lehigh returns to action on Sunday morning when the Mountain Hawks take on the Red Flash of St. Francis (Pa.) in West Palm Beach, Florida.  The opening draw control is set for 10:00 AM.
