Men win, women fall in Lehigh-Lafayette dual

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – Lehigh’s men’s and women’s track and field teams spilt their dual meet with archrival Lafayette on Saturday as the Mountain Hawk men won by a score of 103-100 and the women fell 116.50-86.50.  The men’s meet came down to the final event of the day—the 4x400 meter relay—as Lehigh headed into the event with a 98-97 lead.  Lehigh’s winning relay team of seniors Greg Horn and Brian Ahearn, junior Kyle Manning and sophomore Garrett Zambrows finished the race in a time of 3:20.65, which was four seconds faster than the Leopards and allowed Lehigh’s men to win their fifth consecutive Lehigh-Lafayette Outdoor Dual.

 

“With the men, I was real pleased with the win,” said head coach Matt Utesch.  “They did exactly what I thought they were going to do.”

 

Continues Utesch, “The women had a great meet and swept four individual events and won the 4x400.  I was really pleased with them; they were right in it up until the end.”

 

Freshmen led the way for the men in the field events as Franklin Johnson had top marks in the long jump (23’¾”) and the triple jump (46’8”), while Khalil Uqdah won the pole vault by clearing 14’6”.  Also in the pole vault, sophomores Domenic Aversa and Edwin Schuck placed second and third, respectively.

 

In the running events, Lehigh swept the 3000 meter steeplechase with seniors Sean Swift (9:16.79) and Steve Rosinski (9:34.78) and sophomore Jonathan Wetzel (9:40.36) placing in the top three spots.  Swift added his second win of the day in the 5000 meter run when he edged out Lafayette’s Alex Weschsler by one second and finished in a time of 14:46.31.

 

Senior David Falk added a pair of first place finishes by winning the 100 and 200 meter dashes.  Meanwhile, Ahearn and Horn won the 400 meter dash and the 400 meter hurdles, respectively.  Lehigh also won the 4x100 meter relay when the team of junior Brian Voorhis, sophomore C. Austin Wade, Falk and Johnson crossed the line in a time of 42.27.

 

On the women’s side, junior Emily Roth was the only Mountain Hawk to win a field event.  Roth took the pole vault by clearing 10’6”, while freshman Ashlee Atwell placed second as Lehigh swept the event.

 

In the running events, freshmen Nicole Page and Dana Stellar placed first and second, respectively, in the 3000 meter steeplechase, while senior Jenni Schappert and sophomore Shannon Alejandro were first and second in the 1500 meter run.  Lehigh swept its third running event when seniors Nicole Montegary, Lauren King and sophomore Theresa Fromm had the top three times in the 400 meter hurdles.

 

Sophomore Sarah Serwo won her second consecutive 800 meter run as her time of 2:14.32 edged out Lafayette’s Meghan Baker, who had a time of 2:14.74.  The women also won the 4x400 meter relay with the team of sophomores Jennifer Therkorn, Lindsey Corbetta, Serwo and Montegary finishing in a time of 4:02.28.

 

The Mountain Hawks return to action on Friday when they participate in the two-day Bison Outdoor Classic in Lewisburg, Pa.
