Lehigh tops Sacred Heart, falls to Michigan State

CLEARWATER, Fla. – Lehigh began its weeklong stint in Florida with a two-game split at Jack Russell Stadium on Saturday afternoon.  The Mountain Hawks topped Sacred Heart by a 6-4 count in the afternoon to run their winning streak to four straight.  Later that night, however, the streak was snapped with a 6-3 loss to Michigan State.  Following Saturday’s games, Lehigh holds a 4-2 record.

In the afternoon contest against the Pioneers, senior hurler Kyle Collina was dominant in picking up his first win of the season.  The Bethlehem, Pa. native struck out 12 Sacred Heart batters in 7.1 innings pitched.  At the plate, second baseman Mike Sandonato smacked two hits, including a double, in the come-from-behind win.

Freshman Geoff Campbell set down the side in order in the ninth inning to record his first save.

In the second game, center fielder Joe Ercolano went 3-for-4, and Sandonato added two more hits, but it wasn’t enough as the Spartans topped Lehigh by a 6-4 score under the lights.  The Mountain Hawks had their opportunities, stranding seven runners on base in the game.

Lehigh returns to action Sunday night, as the Mountain Hawks take on IPFW in Clearwater.  Game time is 7:15 pm.
