Mountain Hawks open season with split at DSU

2/25/2006 12:00:00 AM | Baseball

DOVER, Del. – Lehigh opened its 2006 season with a doubleheader split at Delaware State on Saturday afternoon. The Hornets topped the Mountain Hawks 9-7 in the first game, but Lehigh rebounded to win game two by an 8-2 score.  Lehigh junior Matt McBride ripped five hits on the day – including two home runs – to pace the Mountain Hawks attack.

Delaware State (2-9) won the opener, scoring nine times in the victory.  The Hornets used timely hitting to top the visitors in game one.  All six Hornets that drew a walk in the contest came around to score.  Lehigh senior Kyle Collina got the ball in the opener, earning a no-decision in 5 and two-thirds innings of work.  Collina baffled the Delaware State hitters at times, registering six strikeouts.  Andrew Grim (0-1) suffered the loss for the Mountain Hawks on the hill, while Nick Bitter tossed eight and a third innings to pick up the win for the Hornets.

Offensively, catcher Matt McBride ignited the offense with three hits in five at-bats.  McBride lined a homer over the left field fence, and drove in a pair of runs in the game while scoring twice.  Senior second baseman Mike Sandonato went three-for-four in the opener, and center fielder Nick Bet went two-for-five with a three-run double.

The Mountain Hawks quickly put the opener in the rear-view mirror, and tapped Delaware State for a trio of first inning runs in game two.  McBride, playing first base, went two-for-four with another home run and three RBIs in the win.  Senior left fielder Andrew Smith was 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBIs as well, and Sandonato ripped his first career home run.  Right fielder David Moscow also added two hits.

Sophomore hurler Joe Matteo threw five and a third innings, striking out four, to earn his first win of the season.  Jed Davitt threw the final inning and two-thirds of the seven inning game, registering three strikeouts.  Delaware State’s Billy Keyes took the loss.  Defensively, Sandonato continued his strong play up the middle, helping to turn three double plays while recording a pair of diving stops.

For the day, the Lehigh offense registered seven stolen bases.

Due to cold weather and potentially dangerous wind chills, Sunday’s doubleheader at Delaware State has been cancelled.  The Mountain Hawks will return to the diamond on Wednesday, March 1, when Lehigh visits Maryland-Eastern Shore for a pair of games.  First pitch of game one is set for noon from Princess Anne, Md.
