Mountain Hawks compete in NYC

NEW YORK, N.Y. – Lehigh returned to the track on Friday for the first time in over a month by competing at the New York City Gotham Cup held at the New Balance Track and Field Center.  The Mountain Hawk men finished in sixth place out of 18 teams, scoring 14 points along the way in seeded events, while the Lehigh women placed seventh out of 19 schools, registering 11 points in seeded events on the day.

 

On the women’s side, Jen Filiberto recorded five points in the 3000-meters, as she crossed in a time of 10:50, good for fourth place, while the 4x800 team of Shannon Alejandro, Tracie Fails, Karen Welby and Eleni Sarigianis placed fifth with a time of 9:57.80, which gave the Brown and White four points.  Alejandro then added an eighth place finish in the one-mile run, crossing in a time of 5:17.66, which gave the Mountain Hawks one point.

 

In the distance medley relay, Jen Therkorn, K.T. Hessler, Ashley DeAcetis and Sarah Seiler raced their way to fifth place, as the four-some finished in a time of 13:18.88, and picked up four points in the process.  Seiler would go onto finish fourth in the 3000-meter seeded run, finishing in a time of 10:38.84, giving the Brown and White six more points.  Claire Sharman took third in the pole vault, as she cleared 3.15-meters, giving Lehigh six points, while teammate Emily Roth tied for fourth place and added 4.5 points towards the team score.  In the 5000-meter seeded run, junior Jen Schappert came in fifth place with a time of 17:40.45, adding four more points to the team score.

 

In the men’s competition, Brian Ahearn placed fifth in the 800-meter un-seeded run, crossing in a time of 1:59.03, good for four points, while Daniel DeWitt took sixth place in the 5000-meter un-seeded run, with a time of 15:49.27.  In the high jump, senior Vaclav Malek cleared 2.06-meters, to take second place and pick up eight team points and teammates Cody Smart added four points when he cleared 1.96-meters, placing him in fifth place.  Craig Percopo and Domenic Aversa took fourth and eighth place respectively in the pole vault, clearing 4.35 and 4.20 meters in the process. 

 

Senior Rob Hampson took first place in the 3000-meter seeded run, crossing in a time of 8:26.49, good for ten team points and he was joined by junior Victor Vientos, who placed sixth with a time of 8:41.92, which gave the Brown and White 14 points between the two runners.

 

Lehigh returns to action on Saturday, January 21 when the Mountain Hawks host archrival Lafayette at the annual Indoor Meet, held inside of Rauch Fieldhouse.  Action is set to get underway at 1:00.
