NEWPORT, R.I. – Lehigh put forth an impressive effort this weekend as the Mountain Hawks took first place at the 2005 ECAC Women’s Open Tennis Championships at the International Tennis Hall of Fame. The Brown and White had to adjust themselves to the grass courts at the Hall of Fame, but Lehigh won matches against both New Hampshire and Bryant College to win the tournament championship.

The tournament format was as follows: each team played a best of five match against the other two schools. Matches consisted of four singles contests and a doubles match with the lineups remaining the same throughout.

On Saturday Lehigh defeated New Hampshire 3-2 and then Sunday, the Mountain Hawks bested Bryant by a 4-1 score. Against UNH, Lehigh got straight set victories from freshman Arelia Cohen at third singles, junior Cessa Murasko-Blank at fourth singles and a win from Ashley Donohue and Allison Schwartz in the doubles match. Lehigh won the same three flight’s against Bryant and also got a straight set win from Gwen Dwyer at first singles.

Individually, Cohen, Murasko-Blank, Donohue and Schwartz all finished first in their respective flights. Dwyer finished second in the first flight, while Alexis Jacobi finished third in the second flight.

“I am so proud of these women,” said head coach Dave Shook. “Coming in we had no idea we were going to be playing on grass. It took a lot of guts, but we got it done.”

Shook went on to praise the play of his two freshmen, Cohen and Schwartz.

“We really won it with youth today. Our two freshmen were big for us, they won all of their matches for us.”

The Mountain Hawks return to action on Saturday, October 15 when they host the Lehigh Invitational at the Lewis Tennis Center.
