Lehigh finishes up at PLC's; Malek major award winner

Easton, PA – Lehigh finished up at the Patriot League Championships on Saturday, and the Mountain Hawk women finished in fourth place with 78 points, while the Lehigh men came in fifth place with 52 points.  Bucknell won the women’s competition with 209.50 points, and was followed by Army with 154 points, Navy with 136.50 and then Lehigh.  Lafayette finished with 54 points, placing it in fifth place, while Colgate (24), American (16) and Holy Cross (9.50 followed.  For the men, Army was once again the champion, capturing its 14th consecutive championship.  The Black Knights were followed by Navy with 194 points, American with 74, Lafayette with 68 points and then the Mountain Hawks.  Bucknell (24), Colgate (23) and Holy Cross (7) were next.

 

Vaclav Malek was named the Male Athlete of the Meet as the junior won the decathlon with 6407 points, picking up ten team points for the Mountain Hawks.  Also on the men’s side, Sean Swift took second in the 3000 meter steeple chase, finishing in a time of 9:11.45, and Malek added a high jump title to his credit, clearing 6’10” 3/4, tying his own school record. 

 

On the women’s side, Jen Schappert finished second in the 5000-meter run with a time of 17:51.46, while Nicole Montegary finished second in the 400-meter hurdles.  Andrea Luebbe placed second in the 3000-meter steeple chase finishing in a time of 11:12.63, and K. T. Hessler took first place in the high jump, clearing 5’7”.  Hessler also won the heptathlon, scoring 4375, and picked up ten team points in the process. 

 

Lehigh returns to action next week when several Mountain Hawks make their way to Princeton, NJ to compete in the 2005 ECAC/IC4A competitions at Princeton University.  Action gets underway on May 12.
