Princeton, NJ – Lehigh sent several athletes to compete in the 2005 ECAC/IC4A Championships this weekend at Princeton University and there were many highlights throughout the competition.  The Mountain Hawks that had the qualifying times or distances and competed were Jen Schappert, Carolyn House, K.T. Hessler, Lauren Barrett, Nicole Montegary, Vaclav Malek, Alex Hudgins, Sean Swift, Rob Hampson and Pat Boyle, with each turning in a solid performance in his/her event.

Schappert led the track athletes as she competed in the 5,000-meters, racing her way to a sixth place finish in a time of 16:53.56, which shattered the school record set by Lucinda Hull in 2002 (17:09.23), and earned Schappert All-East status, which signifies a top-eight finish.  House placed 18th in the 10,000-meters, finishing in a time of 38:42.43.  Hudgins also ran in the 10,000-meters and the senior captain completed the race in a time of 30:36.93, placing him in 11th place overall, as he just missed All-East status, while Boyle, who joined Hudgins in the 10,000, finished 29th, as he crossed the finish line in a time of 31:47.86.

Hampson competed in the 5,000-meters and the junior finished 25th in a time of 15:06.97, while Swift competed in the 3,000-meter steeplechase and raced his way to a 21st place finish in a time of 9:13.87.  Montegary finished the 400-meter hurdles in a time of 1:02.61 on Saturday, which was 14th best in the preliminary round.

In the field events, Hessler placed 11th in the high jump with a leap of 5’5”, while Barrett placed tenth in the javelin, just two places out of a scoring finish, as the junior recorded a throw of 133’0”.  In the men’s field events, Malek competed in the high jump, but did not clear a high enough height to finish.

Assistant coach Debbie Utesch was very pleased with the work of the Lehigh athletes, especially Schappert and Hudgins.  “Jennie absolutely crushed the school record of Lucinda and this was a really strong finish to a spectacular year for her (Jennie).”  Utesch continues, “Alex capped off a very fine career with this last race, and he was just a bit off of making All-East, so this was a nice way to end his career.  And as far as Sean (Swift) ran, this was the second best performance of the season for him and he’s only a sophomore, so we’re excited about what he has ahead of him.”

As a team, the Lehigh women recorded three points, while the Mountain Hawk men failed to score over the weekend.

Lehigh will have off now until May 27-28 when several Mountain Hawks travel to compete in the NCAA Regionals.
