Randall’s Island, NY – Lehigh junior Vaclav Malek set a personal record and school record in the high jump with a mark of 2.11 meters at the NCAA East Regionals, hosted by Manhattan College, on Friday afternoon.  Malek’s leap placed him in a tie for third in the region and qualified him to compete in the NCAA Track & Field championships next month in California.

Malek cleared the bar twice on Friday to set the new Lehigh record.  In the process, he becomes the first Lehigh male athlete to qualify for NCAA national competition since the Association went to the current regional qualifying format.  Malek becomes Lehigh’s second national qualifier all-time, joining Lauren Barrett, who competed at nationals in the javelin in 2003.

Junior K.T. Hessler – Lehigh’s other student-athlete at the 2005 regionals – will take her turn in the women’s high jump on Saturday.  For Hessler, action is set to get underway at noon ET from Icahn Stadium in Randall’s Island.

For Malek, NCAA competition gets underway beginning June 8 in Sacramento, Calif.
