Philadelphia, PA – It was a good day for several Lehigh student-athletes at the outset of the 2005 Penn Relays, being held at Franklin Field on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania on Thursday night and early Friday morning.

Junior Vaclav Malek got Friday started with a bang, as he set a school outdoor record in the high jump by leaping 6'10" 3/4, which gave him the overall championship in that event.  That mark also qualifies Malek to compete in the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Outdoor regional competition, to be held beginning May 27.  Malek broke the school record of Jim Driscoll, who cleared 6'10" 1/4 in 1980.

On Thursday night, several student-athletes put forth a strong showing to get the action rolling for the Mountain Hawks.  Senior distance runner Alex Hudgins, who had already qualified for IC4A’s in the 10K, added 5K to his list of upcoming postseason events thanks to a good showing on Thursday, where he finished the 5000 meters in a time of 14:39.  Sophomore distance runner Sean Swift finished the steeplechase in a time of 9:16.12 – just 0.12 short of the IC4A qualifying standard.

For the women, ECAC qualifier Jen Schappert improved on her time in the 5,000 meter run by posting a time of 17:11.01 – over eight seconds better than her effort at Bucknell two weeks ago.

Action continues all weekend at the Penn Relays.
