Lehigh sweeps 13th annual Covert Classic

Bethlehem, PA – Lehigh swept the 13th annual John Covert Classic on Saturday afternoon in Rauch Fieldhouse, as both the men and women took first out of ten teams in attendance.  Other schools that competed were Sacred Heart, Towson, Delaware, Richard Stockton, Mount St. Mary’s, St. Joe’s, Rowan, Lafayette and Kutztown.  The Lehigh women compiled 220.50 points on the way to victory, while the Mountain Hawk men racked up 201.50 points, over 50 more than the closest competitor.

 

On the men’s side, Rob Hampson won the one-mile run with a time of 4:18.84 and backed that up with another first place showing in the 3000-meter run, crossing the finish line in a time of 8:41.04.  Alex Hudgins, Sean Swift, Sam Kirk and Mark Swanson were right on Hampson’s tail, finishing in second through fifth place respectively.  Other Mountain Hawk men that turned in solid performances on Saturday were Vaclav Malek, who won the 60-meter hurdles, the high jump and the heptathlon with 4940 points en route to ten team points for the Brown and White. 

 

On the women’s side, senior Khayla Lowe took first place in the 60-meter hurdles as she blazed her way to a time of 9.39 seconds, while Sarah Seiler ran her way to a first place showing in the one-mile run with a time of 5:20.53.  Karen Welby also ran to a first place finish for Lehigh, as she won the 800-meter run crossing the finish line in a time of 2:25.21.  K.T. Hessler added to the Mountain Hawks point total as she won the pentathlon with 3125 points, giving Lehigh ten points towards its team total.

Lehigh returns to action on February 4 when the Mountain Hawks travel to compete in the Armory Collegiate Invite in New York.
